Art Rookie is an independent art publication for people who are curious about art, interested in collecting, and maybe a little unsure where to start.

I started Art Rookie because I wanted the kind of resource I wish I’d had when I began collecting: somewhere to ask the questions, meet the people, and learn how the art world actually works without feeling like I was supposed to know everything already.

We’re especially interested in young and new collectors, and in making the art world more transparent for the people who are just finding their way into it.

Volume II is about people. The artists, collectors, advisors, and museum professionals whose experiences offer different ways into the art world, whether you’re buying your first work or simply trying to understand what goes on behind the scenes.

Art Rookie Volume II launches this November. I’m very excited to introduce you to the people who made it possible.

What actually happens behind the gallery doors? And what about the back rooms, the basement, and all the work that happens out of sight?

The gallery world can look pretty mysterious from the outside, especially when you’re a new collector trying to understand how it all works. But galleries are more than white walls and opening nights. There’s a whole world of work, decision-making, relationships, and logistics behind what eventually makes it onto the walls.

For Art Rookie Volume II, Sam Wilson helps pull back that curtain. This is the kind of behind-the-scenes perspective I love, because the more we understand how the art world actually operates, the easier it becomes to find our footing in it.

If you’ve ever wondered what goes on beyond the exhibition, this one’s for you.

One of the things I’ve learned as a new collector is that you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Knowing who to ask, what questions to bring to the table, and how to navigate the process can make a real difference.

That’s part of why I’m excited to feature Sibilla Maiarelli i

As discussed in the latest episode about first solo shows and “old work” mine (Tim) was at Klaus Von Nichtssagend @klausgallery in their seminal Williamsburg space waaaay back in 2006. I had just graduated from Parsons MFA and had a body of work exploring the milieu surrounding G.I. Gurdjieff, an esoteric mystic who popped up in europe in the early 20th century with some profoundly ancient ideas within a contemporary context. This began my art practice of researching ancient topics and images and arranging them into a modern idiom. Thanks to @ro_hult for some of these funky low res old photos! The show was titled The Struggle of the Magicians, Sept 2006. #gurdjieff #fourthway #gigurdjieff
