A couple of years ago I took part in a tile workshop with the amazing Sarah Fraser, at Manchester Ceramics Collective. I made these tiles and sat on them for a good while deciding what to do with them. Eventually decided I'd make them into a table. A guy called Jimmy Vernon, who is a creative and brilliant crafts person built this table for me using reclaimed mahogany and oak, an old picture frame for the trim and a reclaimed cast iron pub table leg. I am blown away with his clever use of reclaim materials and the beauty he has created with my tiles inlaid in the wood. Probably not doing it justice with my rubbish photos but yes, I am one haaaappppy person right now.

Community Profile - Sarah Fraser @_sarah_fraser šŸ§± Sarah Fraser is a ceramic artist whose practice centres around the collaborative efforts of people and communities, places and material, and how they come together to tell stories and shape the spaces around us. Fraserā€™s work typically makes use of reclaimed waste clay and explores how it can be transformed with energy and attention into a vehicle for expression and transformation. Her most recent completed project is Playscape, a large-scale interactive rammed earth artwork presented at the British Ceramics Biennial, 2025, for which she was the lead artist and producer. šŸ§± ā€œI have been working on the Spode Works site for over seven years now. It plays a vital role in the creative community in Stoke-on-Trent. The buildings and space echo with the hands and voices of the thousands of people who have worked here. The creative community on Spode, as well as the businesses that bring people here are vital for connecting to the living stories of the site to its past. Breathing freshness, friendship and positivity into the City. This is something that exists in spite of the crumbling buildings and needs to be valued. I have moved my studio here to Acava to be in this unique place where my creative community are, and I still pinch myself at how amazing it is to be working with clay at Spode.ā€ šŸ§±

In Stoke, our group has been working on an exciting project for the past couple of weeks! Together with @_sarah_fraser and @acavaspodeworks, weā€™ve been making tableware for our upcoming summer exhibition taking place during Refugee Week in June! In this first session, Sarah shared the basics of pottery, with some of us having a go at throwing on the wheel. The group decorated plates, choosing words like Awad (a gift), Free and Hope šŸ¤ Excited to share some of the plates, mugs and bowls that we made in the next sessionā€¦
