POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

One year ago today, I got to share one of the most meaningful choreographic experiences of my college career.

“Under Their Own Power (Assembly Required)” was created with my incredible co-choreographer and friend @aubreylkdance for @ecudanceprogram first ever themed dance concert, Dancing in the Streets: A Celebration of Motown.

When we first started creating this piece, we wanted to explore the history of Detroit’s auto industry and Berry Gordy’s story, particularly his time as a factory worker before creating Motown. We became really interested in the ideas of assembly, repetition, labor, machinery, and what it means to take what you have been given and create something of your own.

The piece became a story about more than just a factory. It was about people, ambition, individuality, and the process of building something that could eventually become so much bigger than where it started. That idea is something that has stayed with me long after performing it.

I am so thankful to Aubrey for trusting me to create this piece alongside her and for everything we learned throughout the process. I am also incredibly grateful for our faculty mentor @jessinamst , the @ecusotd faculty, and everyone at @ecudanceprogram who supported us and helped bring this work to life.

And of course, the biggest thank you to the dancers who gave this piece so much life. I will always be grateful that we got to create and share this work with all of you.

Some people who I love. The people who stood beside me through everything. Although there are many people missing I couldn’t have done anything without their support guidance and love. Thank you for helping me write this chapter i hope to take you all into the next.

My very final project at ECU & I couldn’t be more proud of this group🥹

“Aren’t We All?” is a piece centered on the seven deadly sins (lust, pride, greed, sloth, envy, gluttony, and wrath), exploring the human tendency to judge others. Too often, we are quick to point out the faults and failures of those around us without first confronting our own. There has only ever been one perfect person to walk this earth, and the reality is that we are all imperfect people navigating a broken world. We are all in need of grace, forgiveness, love, mercy, and empathy- ultimately, of God. It’s our responsibility to remember that and extend to others that same grace we were first given.

It’s never easy to publicly share your faith, but it’s been something I’ve been feeling more and more called to do. Temporary discomfort is something I’m okay with feeling if it means someone else’s eternity. Couldn’t be more happy with how this turned out & I can’t believe it’s over😭❤️
