Hot start Fall it’s 100 degrees & I’m driving round in a fully packed car, dwelling in pots, finding the merch Ava bought me, kidnapping Kate’s new roommates dog, being too lazy to wear gloves while spray painting & slumber parties featuring my sisters sleeping cap

We’re so grateful that we got to participate in @sbnature’s World Oceans Day event again held at the Sea Center on Stearn’s Wharf this past Saturday! We had a blast chatting with the other booths and playing our fishing games with the 2,000+ participants that came to the event 🐙🦀🐟🐬🐳🦑🦈🪼🪸🏝️🦭🐋🐚

Aaaaand what better way to celebrate this important day than with a marine debris cleanup? 😍 The week before the Sea Center event, we had a couple local commercial fishermen go out and execute a two day cleanup at Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Island sponsored by a grant that CFSB has graciously been awarded by the @marinesanctuaryfdn. Special shoutout to @channelislands_srirs and @emma_akmakdjian for their help aggregating some of the gear at Forneys 🙏 and a huge thanks to @reyn.clayton, @droot1, and @mcenterprisesandnursery for all their hard work getting over 1000lbs of abandoned/lost fishing gear and other miscellaneous debris out of the water, off the beaches of the islands, and back home to either be reused or properly disposed of! 👏👍

Fishermen are and always have been stewards of the sea, and we’re appreciative of the fact that every day feels like World Oceans Day to us, amongst the many other maritime users that feel as fortunate! 🌊💙

Last week we were fortunate to participate in our second workshop with the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, this time taking place in Oceanside with important stakeholders from different areas of the country and even Mexico! It was great to come together for 2 days and have conversations and breakout sessions centered around the critical topic of marine debris. We thank GGGI, CDFW, TNC, and everyone else who participated and helped make this event super valuable and worthwhile!

A quick break from MPA updates 🥹

A few weeks ago we were fortunate to be able to go to Washington D.C. with other commercial fishing associations from around the country on a trip organized by the Fishing Communities Coalition (FCC). We were able to speak about our regional issues with important agencies, congressmen, senators, and staff and also got to participate in an FCC-hosted event that celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Magnuson-Stevens Act🇺🇸. The event was held in the U.S. Senate building where over 160 folks gathered to listen to a panel of commercial fishermen/culinary experts and eat some delicious locally sourced seafood.

We were especially thrilled of course to meet with Santa Barbara’s Congressman Salud Carbajal, as well as one of NorCal’s Congressman Jared Huffman, and we’re grateful they made the extra time to attend the seafood event too!

We primarily advocated for lobster tariff relief, direct marketing resources for fishermen, sea urchin mislabeling (illegal, unreported, and unregulated/IUU), working waterfront infrastructure, safety and apprenticeship programs, amongst many other topics. Additionally, this was a particularly exciting time to be in the Nation’s Capitol with USDA’s announcement of an official Office of Seafood! Swipe through to see the FCC press release as well as a snippet from the @nationalfisherman article on this wonderful news that finally gives commercial fishermen the food-producing classification they deserve. We thank the FCC for allowing us to join this trip and can’t wait to see how our country’s new Office of Seafood prospers! 🇺🇸🎣🐟🦀🦞🦐🦪⚓️💙🎉👏
