The Ego's Toolkit | Part 2: Flight — Running from the Heat

When ego decides it cannot overpower the fire, it tries to outrun it
Flight is the ego's attempt to create distance — between you and the pain, between you and the truth, between you and whatever is asking you to change.

What Flight Looks Like:
Avoidance — escaping into work, busyness, substances, distraction — anything to keep from being still enough to feel what's actually happening

Numbing and dissociating — "If I don't feel it, it can't hurt me" — checking out emotionally, going through the motions

Shutting down — refusing to engage, withdrawing, becoming unreachable
Suppression — pushing feelings down, performing stability while your inner world is on fire

Running from commitments — leaving jobs, relationships, communities — not because you've outgrown them, but because staying would require facing something you're not willing to face

Ego's Logic:
"If I retreat from the fire, I won't get burned."

Why It's Hard to Recognize — Culture Rewards It Too:
We call avoidance "staying busy"
We call emotional shutdown "being strong"
We call running "moving on"

The Truth About Running:
Running from the fire doesn't mean the fire goes out. You carry it with you — unprocessed, unresolved, still burning into the next relationship, the next job, the next season of your life.

What if the thing you've been running from isn't trying to destroy you — it's trying to reach you?

Forged. Refined. Reign.

On a simple Sunday morning walk in the park, there are many creatures to encounter. There is such beauty in the simple things that we may consider mundane. Yet, they maintain their beauty still.

Does that feel like you some days? Because you are not contributing to someone's life in a big way, or when hardly anyone knows you or can't remember your name? Well, take some guidance from Nature... just continue to be the best version of yourself in that moment. See yourself and your life from different perspectives to learn to see the beauty that is there. I had to wait until my phone could readjust to take the pic of the spider (the Balck Widow I took yesterday at our Family Fund Day). I take several pics of most of the pics from different perspectives until I can capture the beauty in their simple expressions. I see the beauty in a fallen dried leaf...and in you, when I learn to see the beauty in myself when I am not pleasing others.

Let's live by doing the best with what we have. Simplicity requires letting go of old burdening attachments to see the beauty of in not having or in not knowing. It is not easy, but what a venture is the exploration of slowing down and pacing ourselves to Nature's flow.

We are grateful for the life, living, and presence of our elders. I am so honored to be a part of my community. The Virgin Islands Association of Georgia is a great organization doing great work in the community for so many people. To the Most High, we give thanks. Asé, Asé, and Amen. 🙏🏾🕊🫂

Queen Mothers, each of you who has and continues to serve in the role of Mother (birthed or otherwise), thank you. This is no easy mission. It seems your responsibility never ends, even after your kids become adults. You have taken on a role, whether by choice or circumstance, and have shifted your whole life to serve your young ones. For many mothers, the role becomes even more challenging when the men who should serve as equal co-parenting partners fail to do so. It can become even more disheartening when there may be unhealed wounds from your own mothering and even when other women who could be a major support criticize you because your way of parenting appears less appealing than how they did or would.

So, with all of what may be stacked against you, use those challenges to motivate and even inspire you to take better and good care of yourselves.

I choose this Mother's Day to remind you that your most important role you must serve is in self-leadership, where you operate as your number one priority--yes, even above your kids. Be selftrue. Do not teach your kids that they are the center of your life. Only God is, and then She challenges you to put yourself on the next tier. Your mission is too sacred not to have your kids seeing what it's like for a Queen to honor herself as a priority. Happy Mother's Day!
