POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

At the start of 2024, @pilotlightconsulting was a scrappy team of 2, calling in mercenaries for restaurant launches. By the year’s end, we grew into a nationwide team of 7, spanning from San Francisco Bay to Maine’s Casco Bay. Our first-ever annual retreat in Joshua Tree brought us all together under one roof for dumpling-folding, dice-rolling, and setting the stage for a positive 2025.

In 2024, we explored ways to serve “Ben”— the talented craftsman running a restaurant, bakery, or farm, but in need of financial and systematic expertise to make their business work for them. We also supported “Mary”— the entrepreneurial operator launching a new hospitality venture and looking for a team to bring their vision to life.

This year, we’re leaning into what we do best: helping “Mary” create a profitable business where employees thrive, supported by compassionate systems and value-based leadership.

We proudly present @howmyrestaurantworks as a host for 95% of our content going forward. One of our immutable laws is “there are no secrets” and we hope by removing the term “consulting” from our content, the resources we publish become more approachable for our people.

We launched 3 sections of content in 2024— formerly known as Running the Pass and now known as How My Restaurant Works. The meat and potatoes of our content is on the platform-that-shall-not-be-named, but can be found linked in our bio: starts with a “Sub” and ends with a “stack”.

“Chronicles” brings you fictional case studies based on real-world challenges faced by hospitality entrepreneurs. “Ask a __” is where we tap into the knowledge of the network of experts who make successful hospitality businesses possible. In “Book Club”, we explore books that shape the way we think about management, operations, and team culture.

Snaps to Miranda, Justin, and Courtney for their efforts toward publishing in 2024. This year from HMRW, expect deep dives into values-based leadership, a podcast titled Running the Pass, and a new research column from Courtney’s doctoral work at Gonzaga University.

Follow @howmyrestaurantworks to stay in the loop— LFG 🚀

Meet Allison Slaughter! She tackles Business Innovation at Pilot Light 👋

Allison began her career in client services at retail marketing creative agency FCB/RED in Chicago, IL, and she has explored her passion for food with internships at Brown Bag Seafood in Chicago and Califia Farms in Los Angeles 🛒

Allison holds a MBA from the Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley with a Graduate Certificate in Food Systems 🥊 Before joining Pilot Light she spent two years at top management consulting firm Bain & Company focusing on strategy, go-to-market, and transformation projects for food & tech clients.

We asked Allison to reflect on a PLC Immutable Law that resonates with her: Businesses are made of people.

“This immutable law appeals to both my practical mind and emotional belief system. To do well as a business it’s imperative to align your team’s needs & motivations with the work. I also firmly believe that making empathetic, people-first decisions is just the right thing to do.”

After hearing Allison’s personal Immutable Law, our team kinda wanted to adopt it. Allison (and her dad) say, “It’s is a long race… I’m just trying to embody that things are learnable.” 🏃🏿‍♀️

At PLC, we talk about our Immutable Laws almost every day, and certainly every time we hold our weekly meeting. We use the term “Immutable Law” instead of “Core Value” because they are the rules we have defined for ourselves and lives that cannot be changed.
