My first album “Historically Close Friends” comes out one week from today (Fri 10/16). I have dreamed of putting out a full length album for a very long time but it has always seemed insurmountably difficult: requiring too much time, too much focus, too much money, too much perseverance, too much generosity from others. It was difficult but it was not in fact insurmountable ❣️I am so proud and I am so grateful.

I am someone who largely listens to albums all the way through rather than being a primarily playlist girlie, and this album was made to be listened to that way: it is not just twelve songs, it is its own thing as a whole that I hope can help you deepen your relationship with friendship and intimacy as it did mine.

This whole thing is about friendship. Friendships are increasingly what I view as the most important relationships in my life, and yet they are poorly memorialized in art as the great love stories that they really are. This is one tiny offering upon that altar.

Our new album ROLLING ROCK is out today. We hope it’s a soft, nurturing place to land when you need a respite from this cruel world. It’s funny that there’s this 2016 trend going around because that’s where we last left you with 2016’s “More Than A Friend, Less Than A Lover”. Thank you for sticking with us all these years. We feel so lucky to be able to share our little songs with you. This is a record about grief, loss and radical love in spite of it all. Thank you Kal @_sleepal_ for mixing it and being the perfect collaborator. Thank you Alan at @westwestsidemusic for reuniting with us on the master. Thank you for listening. There’s no other way to put it other than that every day of making this project felt like summer camp. I am endlessly grateful to the friends new and old who played their hearts out on this. These are the versions that made it to tape but I know there are many others to be discovered. Thank you Charlie, Jack, Henry, Catie and Michael for hopping on the bandwagon - I’ve loved getting to find these songs in the room with you and know you better. Nathan, Chitra and Sean for your beautiful additions. You make us a supergroup. Myles for being such a great mentor, guide and genius throughout this experience and Kal for getting in trenches with us. Daniel for your masterful ears at the end of the process. Rowan for your vulnerability, continued trust and friendship. I’ve learned so much from you and ready to do it again. And finally my wife Lily for her endless support in me and for letting us park a giant solar-powered mobile recording truck in our driveway for the week 🚛🚛🚛

With great relief and a fair amount of fear these songs enter the world. These recordings are just as much about those who created them and the process of creating them as they are about the songs and subject matter itself. These songs were the proof that I didn’t need to hide behind my old ways of creation which had long grown stale. These songs marked the arrival of a new community made up of musicians, artists, and friends and the departure of the old regime that had held me (with care) for these last two years.

From a few ideas born back in Ithaca last summer, sifted through with Jonny, and then brought to a room full of instruments and played through until their shape was uncovered and whole. Charlie helped me find a love for drums in my music and it was a privilege having him add the heartbeat to this project. Catie lended me her time and that wonderful voice, singing harmonies across everything and bringing such spirit to our sessions while also never failing to tear me apart about mewing or being caught up in my past. Henry drove down from Sacramento and played his beautiful guitar solos and melody lines, his mind always on Genghis cohen queen chicken and walnut shrimp. Jack and his fretless bass became a favorite of mine to watch with his wild expressions and endless rising and falling shoulders that matched the rhythm. Michael added the breath to these songs with his saxophone, truly the highest class of musician and a calming presence if I’ve ever known one. Jonny wore a thousand hats from playing keys across the songs to emotional support for me in my lower moments and everything in between. I doubt I will ever meet someone with half your character Jonny and I thank you endlessly for the care you brought to all of this. Thank you @abdmobile and @_sleepal_ for all your hard work and knowledge in the recording of these songs. You both are wizards I swear. And thank you @djamesgoodwin for the beautiful mixes and masters. I really couldn’t be more proud of these songs. So much to come.

If I get even just a few years in my lifetime as rich as this one, I will be a very lucky man. From a period of great lamenting that felt as if it would never break to six weeks on the road with the most wonderful people, standing in front of a thousand faces each night, realizing quickly that it was all going to be alright after all. Then home again in the summer with my guitar and a Fishman amp, starting the songs that would soon lead me to the company of a beautiful band and a newfound purpose in this crazy dream of mine. Paris with my sister and mother (Wren, we finally did it!!).

Old friends have come together with new, and for the first time in my life, I feel I have a community woven together with kind and driven people who can stop a moment to hold a good conversation before carrying on toward their ambitions and strivings.

Then, of course, the LA show just a month ago. As a friend who had seen me play many times remarked, “That was the first time I’ve ever seen you smile while on stage.” But how couldn’t I be? — Playing the new songs with musicians and friends who I truly look up to and who have helped me find my voice. A crowd of loved ones from all over this state and country sat in such respectful silence in an old church. It was a night handpicked from my dreams and such assurance that I am following the right path.

I love you all dearly and thank you for giving me such a life.
