#FlashbackFriday - We proudly closed out September by joining the @africanamericandayparade as Grand Marshal and the inaugural recipient of the AADP Community Institution Award, a powerful recognition of our enduring role as a cultural beacon and treasured institution rooted in Harlem. From Saturday’s Community Literacy, Health & Culture Festival to Sunday’s parade, our incredible Apollo fam showed up in full force: Charlene “Chi-Chi” Smith (@itsmechi_chi) brought Groove Theory to the festival, #AmateurNightApollo 2024 winner @therealcruzangel kicked off Sunday’s pre-show celebration, and DJ SLID3 (@_slid_3) kept our float moving to the beat…And we didn’t let the weather rain on our parade. Growing up on the Lower East Side, we would get harassed for playing our music too loud or just for being in the park at certain hours. So to come full circle and have our own event in the park, with a sound permit, able to play my music as loud as we wanted, honestly felt like a dream come true. S/O DJ @_slid_3 for making the moment special. And what made it even better we fed the whole hood. ❤️ This was bigger than music. Bigger than an event. It was about taking back space in the same neighborhood that raised us and creating something positive for our people. The Lower East Side is more than where we’re from it’s who we are. This is what community looks like when we come together, take care of each other, and create something for the next generation. For the hood, by the hood. LES forever. ❤️🏆 Special S/O to @lesyearbook and every organization and person involved who helped bring this vision to life. This is what happens when the community comes together for the community. ❤️

Bodega Bruja is a Bronx-born DJ, producer, and musician based in NYC. They began DJing at WNYU and went on to intern with Love Injection at 21, building community through the city’s dance music underground. Their sets are driven by rhythm and spirit, moving through deep and soulful Latin house, disco, and the darker edges of post-punk, new wave, and electro. They have since played venues including Terminal 5, Jupiter Disco, Mood Ring, Paragon, Bossa Nova Civic Club, and more. They are an 8Ball Radio host of their show called Ritual (recorded every other Sunday, 4-6pm), one-half of SIGNS with Recreational DJ & their joint listening session series SEMIOTICS, and hold a quarterly residency at Eavesdrop. Rhino Clark is a writer and DJ from Harlem. His selections are open format and genre agnostic, but he is drawn to emotional and percussive music. Sounds that inspire movement. Textures that tickle the ear. Tracks that are as much inspired by music traditions past as they are pointing to sonic futures. All rooted in his reverence for African diasporic art forms. He is a resident on 8 Ball Radio where he hosts “Raw Forms” bimonthly and he curates an event series by the same name. Kweku is a Ghanaian DJ and organizer from Queens, New York whose work traverses The Black Atlantic through music. His roots and New York City upbringing supplies his flair for blending punchy club kicks with percussive riddims, weaving together lively mixes of relentless drums which has moved dancefloors in both his homes of NYC and Accra. His party series Beats without Borders (@beatswithoutborders ) maps the connective threads of Black sound and Black life across the diaspora through underground electronic music, and his monthly show Asanka Radio streams every four Tuesdays from 8-10 PM on 8 Ball Radio. DJ SLID3 is an open format DJ who sets the tone with her dramatic transitions and song choice. Queens-native Marios will be showcasing a wide spectrum of sounds ranging from downtempo, kizomba, dancehall, trap, reggaeton, and shatta. Catch 5 of the illest DJs in the city at “Signals” from 10PM-2AM! Come earlier in the day to see a whole range of other fantastic artists as well. August

Join us for Signals - A City Kids x 8-Ball Situation. On Saturday, August 29th we have a full day (and into the night) slew of multidisciplinary programming by artists who are not only NYC based, but NYC raised. So many artists make New York City their home, but this is an opportunity to celebrate homegrown talent, people who have been shaped since childhood by the city we all love. During the day, we have five live music acts and two documentary screenings, along with work from eight visual artists and five local orgs tabling. After 10PM, we move into a dance party featuring five of NYC’s best DJs. We asked artists to contemplate the concept of signals - How can different signals lead people down different paths to a common destination? When are they vulnerable to misinterpretation? How do we signal as New Yorkers that we are from here, how do people who move here signal they belong? We don’t have the answers, but we hope this event will help you dig for them together. Curated by @justsomecitykids & 8 Ball Community. All profits go back to the artists participating in the show. Tickets are $15 before 10PM, $20 after; no one turned away for lack of funds.
