International Congress on Medieval Studies

This year, members of the FSU History community traveled to the International Congress on Medieval Studies, one of the world’s largest gatherings of medieval scholars.

We’re especially proud to highlight current graduate students Baylee Staufenbiel, Noah Cole, and Matthew Hunter, who joined fellow FSU History alumni in presenting research, attending panels, and connecting with scholars from around the globe.

The Congress brings together researchers across disciplines to explore the medieval world through history, literature, religion, art, archaeology, and more—and it’s exciting to see FSU History represented among them!

10 years ago 🥁🎶💕 still the same person just with way more seasoning on me from life itself. I’ve been trying to get my chops back to play drumset, but it’s always a nice reminder to see where my drumming roots came from. I hope everyone that I drummed and worked with is doing well! 💕 #AQAQAQ #WBRCC #nationaldrummonth @atlantaquest

Mark your calendars!
On Wednesday, April 22, the ePublic of Letters will be hosting Noah Cole’s lecture “The Apocalypse, Partisans, and Valerius Maximus: Fifteenth-Century Preachers and Political Factionalism in Italy.”

This talk will explore the ideological underpinnings of medieval Italian factionalism. Specifically, it will show that mendicant preachers crafted complex political theories on the issue. Exploring the Latin sermons of Bernardino of Siena, James of the March, and Leonardo Mattei, it will argue that these preachers should be thought of as political theorists. More broadly, the talk will argue that factionalism-as-concept needs more study.

Noah Cole is a current PhD candidate in History at Florida State University. You can find a description of his research interests and their development on the History department's website.

The talk will take place at 12pm EDT in the U.S., 5pm in the U.K., and 6pm on the European continent.
