Happy International Albinism Awareness Day!!

Zoe has oculocutaneous albinism. Today we celebrate how wonderfully made our baby girl is. What better way for Zoe to celebrate her 1st IAAD than on the 10th anniversary. This year’s theme is “A decade of collective progress”. From the moment Zoe was born and diagnosed, we have received so much support, love, resources, and knowledge to assist us. Here are some fun facts about albinism!

💛 Albinism is a rare, non-contagious, genetically inherited difference present at birth. In almost all types of albinism, both parents must carry the gene for it to be passed on, even if they do not have albinism themselves.

💛 Albinism results in a lack of pigmentation (melanin) in the hair, skin and eyes, causing vulnerability to the sun and bright light.

💛 Many people with albinism have vision problems such as nystagmus (involuntary eye shaking to focus on an object) and strabismus (where the eyes fail to balance).
