Not all disabilities are visible and not all service dog handlers “look disabled.”

Many disabilities are neurological, cardiac, psychiatric, autoimmune, metabolic, or otherwise internal. You cannot see POTS, epilepsy, diabetes, PTSD, autism, severe anxiety disorders, or countless other conditions just by looking at someone in a grocery store. Invisible does not mean imaginary. It does not mean mild. And it certainly does not mean someone is “faking it.”

Service dogs are medical equipment protected under the ADA. They are individually trained to perform specific tasks that mitigate their handler’s disability such as medical alerting, retrieving medication, providing mobility support, interrupting psychiatric episodes, or guiding during disorientation.

You are not entitled to someone’s diagnosis. You are not entitled to their medical history. And you are not entitled to decide whether they are “disabled enough.”

If you see a working service dog:
• Do not pet
• Do not distract
• Do not make kissy noises or call to them
• Do not question the handler about their disability

The best form of support is simple respect.

Invisible disabilities are real. Disabled people do not owe you proof.
