Yesterday I spent the day doing one of my favourite things, making hat plait with straw and talking to people about this endangered craft. I was situated in Leagrave Cottage which is thatched with long straw and was one home in the mid 1800’s to Joseph and Rebecca Thomas - agricultural labourer and straw plaiter and their children: Emma (17), Esther (12), Caroline (6), straw plaiters, Joseph (3) and Dinah (7 months).
A great museum full of history and in a lovely setting. Thanks for having me @chilternoam

Good news! 🎉 We've still got a few spaces left on our strawcraft course on Sunday 4 October, where you can learn how to make a traditional corn dolly and try out some more contemporary designs and techniques to make a unique harvest token.

Strawcraft is a rural skill, which was popularised in the 1960s and 70s, and is classed as one of more than 70 ‘endangered’ skills on the Heritage Crafts Association’s Red List.

Course tutor @wheatear_strawcraft was first introduced to the craft in primary school. After using paper art straws, he quickly progressed to working with actual straw and is still just as passionate about it 50 years on!

Tap the link in bio now to book your place - and we've also got some Christmas courses coming up, too!

Delighted to receive my copy of countryside magazine @countrysidenfu
Thanks so much for featuring my work and for commissioning me to make a banner.
It’s wonderful to be able to champion my craft and support British farming too.

My banners are made by hand with no AI. The making, the process, the materials, the research, the planning and the hand crafting are all important.

A reminiscence from about 15 years ago. This was a really popular workshop that I delivered. It’s all about the straw’s preparation to make it glow and to have enormous flexibility.

Made in the early 2000s by the amazingly talented Donna Morgenstern of New Cambria, Kansas. Donna used Kansas wheat and home dyed the straws.

After nearly 20 years her incredible skills still shine through.

Her work continues to inspire others to be creative and adventurous to move Straw Work forward.

Donna is a true artist with straw. There’s so much still to learn and admire.
