When we first asked Fiona if she would be the inaugural guest for the Heads of Department Masterclass, her immediate answer was no.

Fiona is, by her own admission, a very shy person. What ultimately changed her mind was the idea that the masterclass could give her an opportunity to shine a light on what Production Design actually is.

Because when you ask the question, “What is Production Design?”, you’d be surprised how many people struggle to answer — including people working in the film industry.

It’s easy to recognise Production Design in big, fantastical and period films. But what about the smaller films and television shows that involve months and months of work, and still manage to tell the most extraordinary stories — stories that break your heart, transport you somewhere else, and make you feel as though you’re actually living in that world?

In some ways, Production Design can do even more heavy lifting in these intimate productions.

Every set has to place the characters in a world that feels genuine, real and lived-in. Every object, every prop and every detail can tell us something about a character, their history and the moment in their life we are witnessing.

And making that look effortless takes an enormous amount of work — and endless, endless thought. Often 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Sometimes the work is so deeply embedded in the sets, the characters and the story that the result can look almost incidental. As though the film crew simply walked into a real house and started filming.

That is rarely, if ever, the case.

Perhaps that’s why Production Design can sometimes go unnoticed. Even within our own industry, people don’t always know what Production Design involves — or just how much of the storytelling depends on it.

So that’s what we’re hoping to do with the Heads of Department Masterclass: shine a light on the incredible people and departments whose work is fundamental to telling the stories we love.

And there are plenty more lights to shine.

More departments, more conversations and more masterclasses to come. Link to masterclass in bio.... #snowtown #productiondesign

Fiona worked with Director Jane Campion very early in her film career, on the first series of Top Of The Lake and compared it to taking a masterclass.
Here she is talking about what she learned from this ground breaking director and all round incredible woman, who builds people up, while seeking their best.
Coming in April, Production Designer, Fiona Crombie invites us to her master class, where she takes us through her origins, inspirations and methodology.
