Since losing my brother it’s been easy to declare 2025 as the worst year ever. Thats how grief envelopes you — pure tunnel vision with no other viewpoint than “I’m mourning. Life sucks and the world has gone back to normal, except for me.”

However, I think awarding 2025 as the worst year ever would be doing it a massive disservice, because there was so much good in those days leading up to December 27th. In fact, it was a year that completely changed my life and its trajectory, for better or for worse.

So, in trying to remind myself how life may be hauntingly dark and surreal at times, there’s also a beauty to it, so innately human that it makes you grateful for its reminders. Here’s a list of things I’m grateful for from 2025 (in no particular order):

1. Seeing and photographing the Aurora Borealis (again if you can believe it).
2. Sunrise hikes with my pup and bestie Kate.
3. Growing in my workplace and freelance gigs. I adore my coworkers and couldn’t imagine working alongside anybody else.
4. My body. Competing in my second Growler and first 15K was so much fun!
5. Color. I live in such a colorful and joyful part of the world.
6. Friends who wanna play dress up or go skiing in August (at night).
7. My first PR trip with @fjallravenofficial! Such a treat to hike in the desert with some wonderful women.
8. Seeing my best friend @tr.peterson graduate AND get engaged to @aidanclouse all in the same year. 🥹
9. Reuniting with @jeffschmuck in Whistler, the place where I realized photography was my life’s vocation and met the guy who made me feel more than capable at it.
10. Walking across Scotland. That entire experience deserves a memoir. Truly.
11. Seeing my best friends @pfoxxy_lady and Walker tie the knot as I stood by their side. AND helping @jnbealer propose to @rowan.block in the mountains. I love love!
12. Realizing family and community means everything to me.
13. Getting engaged to @joshua_boolin. I don’t think I’ve ever smiled so hard in my life. I love you ❤️
14. Reminiscing on the memories with my brother, and realizing I have another guardian angel up there. Big brothers are the best.
