Directing Soil was like standing at the helm of a ship while dedicated hands hoisted the sails for me and the sea raged round us; it felt like the closest to Captain I’m ever going to get, lest that Sparrow ever receives my message in a bottle.

Soil was born in my first apartment with my best Savannah girl, one stormy sophomore evening. She was always Sydney’s baby, and for the sake of the metaphor I midwifed the hell out of it. Soil is the perfect example of our dynamic: Sydney’s passion, originality and desire to be in as many creature features as possible mixed like some magic potion with whatever makes me who I am; I wish I had known just how important that night would be. One rushed pitch and powerpoint for Film 232 became a fully-fleshed piece of my heart, two years later.

It took a lot to learn how to believe in myself, and Soil dragged me through every ugly step of that. Sydney held me up, Christian kept me in place, my family reminded me of my roots. PJ and Sutton, two evil geniuses with whom I never truly felt qualified to work beside brought me immense support from every angle, even when I didn’t know how much I needed them. Now we’re family, and we’ll always have this no matter which crossroads we face.

A lot went wrong, but a lot more went right. And the rain held off on us all weekend this time. The sky opened up and cried with me when we finally wrapped, like a sigh of relief. We had done it.

Hayley, my producer, my hairdresser, my beautiful buccaneer I couldn’t steer this ship without you. Thank you for your unwavering strength and support, for solving every problem with grace.

Mitch, my second in command. How little did I know you in the beginning and how much do I love you now. You kept us all steady, and mapped us home to stay the course. I wonder how many cigarettes you burned through.

PJ, there are no other words: you’re a fucking legend. It was an honor to stand beside you. I can’t wait to say “I know him” when I’m streaming awards shows from wherever I end up. You lead with such a calm and steady flow, and everything falls into and out of place just the way we need it.

(More in comments… I’m a little emotional.)
