It’s honestly taken me a while to sit with my feelings around the 2nd place finish at this year’s tournament. As you’ve seen previously, I put a lot of time and energy into training and preparing to take advantage of opportunities whenever they present themselves. One thing I’ve learned from this rugby path, and from my experience as an athlete in general, is that the journey shapes the destination.

When the whistle blew on the last try of the game, I felt my soul drain through my feet. That was it; nothing more, and time was up. The opportunity came and went, and we didn’t make it, again. It felt like the last year had condensed into a single moment and then completely vanished. The road to this goal seemed stretched into eternity. My mind immediately ran to training, because at this point, it’s ingrained. It’s a wild feeling—holding an overwhelming sense of grief while also battling the urge to train until I can’t think. I was proud that my fire was still burning, but I also knew I needed to sit with the loss so I could move forward without letting it haunt me at every pause.

So, as I’ve always done, here’s my honest truth: sometimes games feel like more than games, and the losses linger like bad breakups. I cried for a while—over the butter, sitting on the train. I’ve stared aimlessly for hours, feeling raw. There were moments I asked myself why it was affecting me so much, but I quickly reminded myself it’s because of how deeply I pour into this dream. My passion is something I embrace and never shy away from. It’s like the tide; when it’s strong, it pulls without discretion. Knowing who I am and trusting in my ability, no matter that pull, is what makes the difference.

I consider this one of the many works of my life, and I’m grateful for the chance to come up short in this sense. There’s a world of growth between 1st and 2nd, and I know I’m on my way.
