On June 4th, I received my first award for Journalism at the 53rd Annual Public Defender Education Conference in Lexington, Kentucky.

I was awarded the Anthony Lewis Media Award for one of my stories on the public defender shortage and its impact on rural communities in Kentucky.

I am truly honored, and this has reminded me why I got into Journalism in the first place. I wanna share stories that help people and raise awareness.

4 years ago, a time like now, I was over the moon excited that my “deferred” status had changed to “accepted” on my UVA application. I had no clue what major I wanted to do, but all I knew is that I was going to THE University of Virginia, and that alone was an amazing blessing from God. If only I knew how hard it was going to be, how many tears I would shed, how much heartbreak I would experience, I would have prayed for a little more strength. Nothing worth having comes easy, and the 3.49 GPA in a double major in African/African American Studies and Foreign affairs was a testament to that statement. I speak about Jesus Christ freely and with pride as I remind y’all that God will never forget you, even when things seem stagnant. I’ve made the most beautiful memories here, from beginning a drunken weekend on a Thursday after class, to spending hours at OAAA and LPJ laughing and “studying”” with my friends, to being able to catwalk across several runways, from Africa Day to Fashion for a Cause. I couldn’t have made these memories without a few people. To my parents, thank you for pushing me to my limit and always being a shoulder to lean on. I hope I made you proud. To my dear friend, my beautiful amazing sister @_tayy22 , I honor you for the blessing you’ve been in my life. Thank you for walking this journey with me. @mal_achiii thank you for always being so easygoing, a friend that always calmed me down whenever I was panicking(which was OFTEN). @_klk.bp thank you for being a sweet and gentle soul, for allowing me into your space where you and your roommates literally took me out my most depressive and dark days with jokes and banter. To my girls, @sierrabrad4d @angiee.grey @dani.aliyaa @amandaarob_ , thank you for showing me the real meaning of sisterhood. To all my friends tagged, I love y’all so much, and I hope I was half of what you were to me during this time. To my lovely clients, thank you for keeping me afloat and making me a part of UVA’s black community. And a special thanks for the faculty and staff at UVA. I am an evidence that JESUS CHRIST alone is the lifter of men. I have worn the honors of honor, I have graduated from UVA.Thank you Jehovah.
