Today’s mission accomplished. I went with my friends Andy & Ted to find the camper in Hurley NY in which folksinger Karen Dalton died in 1993. #karendalton

Tom Waits, 1985, Tompkins Square Park NYC, for the back cover of his album Rain Dogs. 1st 📸 by Ted Barron. 2nd 📸 by Robert Frank. @_tedbarron_ #tomwaits #tedbarron #robertfrank
From a @nytimes article by Ted Barron “I lived on the Lower East Side and was out walking in the neighborhood. I was just cutting through Tompkins Square Park and walked up to this scene, and I immediately recognized Robert Frank, because at that point I was probably looking at his photographs every day. I realized who he was photographing, and I made a few photographs while I was watching. I didn’t want to be in the way, and didn’t want to become part of what was going on.”

What a great moment of serendipity I experienced last night. I pulled Talese off the shelf because I hadn't read him in a while. I marveled again at his brilliant "New York is a City of Things Unnoticed," and wondered who now writes about NYC like this—digging unrelated connections, steeped in cinematic details, celebrating the marginalized and the obscure. Then I picked up the premier issue of Third Man Records' Maggot Brain and opened to Luc Sante's brilliant "Commerce," aided and abetted by fantastic photos by Ted Barron, and I thought, Oh yeah, Sante writes like that.

When we were kids this felt like a jungle to us. You could find anything here. The weeds were so tall and it felt amazing to explore it all.
