This is not a celebration. This is a struggle for food.
My children push through the crowd at the food charity center, hoping today they’ll be lucky enough to get something to eat.
This isn't what childhood should look like.
As a mother, watching them in this chaos breaks me.
But I still believe in hope… that someone out there will hear our plea and help.

🕯️ Hungry Eyes, Waiting Hearts 🕯️
Here, with no electricity or gas, my children sit by a wood fire, waiting for their only meal of the day.
Their hunger doesn’t understand patience. They watch the pot closely… hoping it will finish faster.
Sometimes, the wait is longer than their little bodies can bear. But they have no choice — hunger is stronger than time.

This scene repeats every day. And every time, it breaks my heart.

If these words reach you, maybe you can be the reason they don’t sleep hungry tonight.

My week-long staycation in review 🫶🏽

Allowed the time to, I felt the magic of my city and the life I’ve come to create here everyday. My mornings were early and filled with the words of Malcolm X as I read them in my sun-soaked living room which sits in the same Harlem he lived, on the avenue now named in his honor. I broke bread (okay, dosa) with old friends who remind me how we stay alive in memory and how seamlessly the arc of our lives can bring us back together, as though time were a flat circle (or maybe a flat cylinder… like a dosa). The Slow Rush filled the air of my apartment at every given chance, the perfect encapsulation of how free time feels when you know it’s limited - drawn out, undulating, unpredictable, rhythmic.

I preemptively worried that my time off would be restless and boring but every inch of it was filled with family, friends, flowers, falsettos, and a deep feeling of familiarity. A friend took the day off to spend it with me doing everything touristy from Bryant Park to NYPL to Artichoke pizza, another took me to the Wicked premiere, others indulged me in boozy brunch, making bouquets with spare blooms, and scary movies. I went to an Afro-beats set where I happened to run into an old college friend, the trains were on time (even when I had to wait, ready with my book in hand), the sun shined on the days I needed it to, and it poured and poured and poured rain when my week was winding down. I wish I could cram everything I want to show and say into 20 slides and a caption but just like a week off, it’s just short of enough 💛
