I don't mind working in the dark. Light is so much more ethereal that way.

Comment with a short story about a "darkest before the dawn" moment you've had just before a victory recently. A woman in the dark, caught by a beam of light.

What I See in Tonya:
A lot of what drives the work I do is the people I meet, and their stories. @_tttonyaaa met up with me in downtown Fredericksburg where I went to college. I never thought I’d be outside my favorite coffee shop doing portraits.

Before I saw Tonya, her little yorkie Mickey came panting down the old brick sidewalk steps ahead. Come to find that he was her service dog after she had undergone a brain hemorrhage some years back. Being that we are very close in age, it was hard to imagine something so debilitating happening to her like that. The amount of respect and admiration I felt for @_tttonyaaa just within the 1 and a half hour shoot we worked on together I think says so much about how easy she made it to create and meet as real people. She has a natural grace that carries through every frame, so sometimes I’d just follow her lead on posing to capture her as honestly as I could. A beauty that doesn’t flaunt, but exists without the trying too hard (and her skin really photographs amazingly, oh my lord). She’s the kind of person that is genuine about every interaction she has and I know that comes from a place that has worked hard in healing the mind and the body.

Sometimes it’s hard to know that as an artist you are deeply appreciated for your craft, but from the start of our session @_tttonyaaa offered the kindest words, ones I should say to myself more instead of the criticism. Both times we’ve worked together I’ve been the happiest photographer and love the gorgeousness we’ve created. What I see in Tonya is resilience and light in the face of an experience that could have kept her down. Instead, she pierces through that darkness by overcoming the odds. Nothing is set against a person with her strength.

I’ve been meaning to do more write ups like this about my subjects. Every person I’ve had in front of my camera has surprised me in all the best ways people do. I can’t say how many conversations I have daily with strangers and friends that leave something in me. So I’d like to honor that more by sharing with you all the loveliness that I seek in anyone around me. Today it’s the GOAT @_tttonyaaa.🤍

All that really matters; is what, most don’t have the courage to see,
Who you became; from the day of your birth, the dash and the final chapter that makes your story complete.

And I just, I need to get through this
Or just get used to it.
