We’re back on set for graduation films and thrilled to share this AFTRS On Set from the 2025 short film Yakyu.   Production designer Tyler Pease takes us behind the scenes of Yakyu, directed by Taku Rogers. With a minimalist approach to the film’s visual identity, Tyler focused on props, costumes and striking compositions that helped tell the story. A key part of the role was creating a head sculpture that informed the prosthetics used in the film’s climactic final sequence. Since graduating, Tyler has been working in the production design department on feature films.   A psychological horror thriller, Yakyu follows two brothers grappling with a generational burden passed between them.   Yakyu is one of AFTRS’ Year 3 graduation productions, student-led projects that bring together three years of learning, creative development and craft as part of the Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production.   Applications for the Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production close tomorrow, 7 October. Apply now.   AFTRS On Set Produced by Emilio Broodryk @emilivro   CREW Writer/Director – Taku Rogers @hiyamataku Producers – Xavier Cutts and Ruby Brookes @xavier.cutts @rubymaryb Associate Producer – Alex Mcleay Cinematographer – Kyan Paltoft @kyan.paltoft Production Designer – Tyler Pease @tyl.r5 Special Effects/Art Dept. Transfer season is upon us. At HS22 and HS23, we welcomed a new wave of signings who made an instant impact. Fresh faces combined with familiar ones creating new HALFSPACE CAMPEONES. For some, it was a long time coming. Long serving players captaining their sides to silverware for the first time, showing that experience surely does pay off.

Looking ahead to second semester productions, AFTRS On Set is back with more behind-the-scenes from last year’s student productions.   Meet Luke Huang, the 1st Assistant Director behind Susan I’m Disappearing, as he shares what it takes to keep a film set running smoothly, why communication is at the heart of the role, and how an AD works closely with cast and crew to bring a production together.   Susan I’m Disappearing is a documentary-hybrid film exploring the story of 83 Dixon Street and the early days of Sydney’s Chinatown through the eyes of Susan. Produced as part of the Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production program, the film was one of AFTRS’ Year 3 graduation productions, which are student-led projects bringing together three years of learning, creative development and craft.   CREW Writer/Director – Tyler Kang @_tylerkang Producer – Elle Charalambu @ellecharalambu Cinematographer – Gus DeVylder @gus.devylder Editors – Taku Rogers and Tyler Kang @luckyeditor1234 Production Designer – Tyler Pease 1st AD - Luke Huang @luckyeditor1234 Costume Designer – Madison McCreath @madisonmccreath Sound Design – Christina Booth @elphotobooth Composer – Julia Potter @julia_writes_music Video produced by Zali Hamilton @zalihamilton Support by @constellationcreatives @soulofchinatown
