My acupuncture school’s Kapoho campus was reclaimed by Tutu Pele this weekend. This was truly a magical place of learning; academically, spiritually, and personally. Deep truths were revealed to me here and even deeper connections to the people who shared in these summers with me. From early morning qi gong and meditation class, to chanting, learning traditional therapies, gathering medicinal herbs and connecting with the land. I’m humbled by the impermanence of our existence and beyond grateful for my time spent on this now reclaimed land. My heart pours out to those who have been affected and lost their homes. May we be grateful each and every moment for what is here and now. 🌋🙏🏽🧡✨ #kapoho #impermanence #rebirth

The land that birthed this brilliant hibiscus has been reclaimed by Pele's flow. Five acres which formerly served as the World Medicine Institute’s Big Island outpost was overtaken yesterday by lava. Every summer, the entire student body of our tiny Chinese Medicine Masters program would spend a week on the school's land in Kapoho for what I affectionately referred to as Taoist Summer Camp. We woke with the sun to practice new giqong forms such as Welling the Life Root and Lotus, made medicines and foot baths from the land's abundant flora, learned new acupuncture techniques like Sun Si Miao Ghost Points and Fire needling, took turns cooking amazing meals for each other, escaped to the tide pools and champagne ponds and warm ponds in between classes, danced under the stars together, and slept beneath an eight-sided yurt known as the Bagua house. It is honestly surreal to know that it is all gone. I feel so lucky for the memories we created there, and to have been a part of the last class to graduate on that sacred piece of land. My heart aches for those who have been displaced... the inevitability of impermanence doesn't seem to make it any easier to encounter. This was a very special corner of the world, and I am forever grateful to have known it.
