Victor Gandon represents a new generation of Champagne growers who remain deeply attached to their family heritage while taking a contemporary approach to terroir. Based in Branscourt, he has taken over his family’s vineyards. The initials “J.M.” pay tribute to his father, Jean-Marie, whom Victor honours on the back label of his bottles with the words: “This wine is a tribute to his great heart.” Trained as an oenologist and also involved in viticulture within one of Champagne’s major houses, Victor has been developing his own project since 2020, the year of his first vinifications. His range currently consists of a single cuvée, Les Pièces, a 100% Pinot Noir Brut Nature. In the vineyard, he follows a thoughtful approach that respects living soils, without the use of herbicides or insecticides.
In the cellar, the wines are made with minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, ageing on the lees, and no fining or filtration. His aim is to express the identity of his terroirs and the character of each vintage with precision.

When to drink champagne:

With your hotdogs

On the street with your friends

Outside of a garage in the rain

Champagne belongs in every place that good people are! You don’t need a date, an accomplishment or a specific mood. Get your hands on a bottle and get out there 🍾🍾

@_victorgandon_

The amount of amazing champagne these days is mind blowing!

There are so many fantastic producers making beautiful champagne and then there are those that stick out for making truly special champagne.

JM Gandon’s Les Pieces is exactly that!

From an insanely tiny plot, this is 95% Pinot Noir and 5% Meunier. It’s an absolute thrill ride in a glass as it shows off so much class, red fruits, biscuits, toast, poached pears, red apples, and some red florals. In a sea of champagne, this really stuck out for how balanced and classy it is.

I’ve had this producer once or twice before, but I was never able to truly dig in like this. Very little is made, so to be able to drink a full bottle was something special.

If you’re thinking of reaching for this, be sure to like this post and follow me for wines exactly like this beautiful bottle of JM Gandon!!

Turns out that getting stuck in France for a few extra days because of a teeny tiny blizzard in NY isn’t too bad 🙆🏻 we’ve got a few exciting articles coming soon from the trip 👀

my second proper post this year - gosh i‘m slow ⏳😩

the older i get, the more i see the similarities between selecting & compiling words for articles/texts/posts/reviews about wine and selecting & compiling vinyl records for mixes/tapes(!)/listening sessions/partys 📝💻🎚️🎶

both are joyous & fulfilling and at the same time arduous & demanding activities for me, in both i do tend to overthink, over-criticize, overcorrect - but at the end, what i often like in the final results is the spontaneous, unplanned, surprising element of it. so in that spirit, i shall type the following lines quite offhand & unedited - hope you don‘t mind (if you‘ve managed to read this far 🤭)

before completing the annual update of what‘s new & hot on the german market champagne-wise at the end of this week and then having tasted deep into 500ish samples (not counting the bottles tasted before august, mind you🏋🏼‍♂️) for champagne magazin & @meiningers_sommelier, here‘s some of the most intriguing smaller fresh names that left a lasting impression on me: different growers, different subregions, different styles - but all very much worth checking out, and almost more importantly nowadays:
zero hype, zero „super rare and hard to get“, zero „way too expensive“ 🤙🍾

i‘ll try to get into posting here more regularly again, maybe even some vinyl-related things, so please do stay tuned and see if that is really going to happen 😉
