Fire season, like life, has its peaks and valleys.
Like any job there is a learning curve to it.
There are obstacles and different forms of adversity on a day to day basis.
Despite its challenges and all of its variables, I feel we as a crew did our best to reign in what we had control over.
That’s what every fire crew must do to get the job done.
I remember from my entry training something that has stuck with me through it all.
Our crew bosses teach us that fire is a dynamic environment and in order to be successful “flexibility” is key.
It sounds easy, but that quote seems to apply when things are not going your way.
I personally took the approach of focusing on things that I both struggled with and succeeded in.
Things such as my attitude.
My discipline.
If I can’t lock in myself, how can I be of service to my teammates?
How effective of a firefighter or a person could I truly be?
This year was my third season and going into it I still felt like I had much to learn.
I feel like I was at a point finally where I had a grasp of the fundamentals, and could start helping with leadership and the overall management of our assignments.
I’m grateful to have been part of a company that focuses on all areas of development.
Doing the job right and doing it well.
Not every contracting crew has high standards and expectations, but that’s what makes the difference in success or failure.
Life or death.
It was an honor to play a small part of it all.
In the end I walked away with not just beautiful experiences, but more importantly life-long relationships and friendships.
That was my take away from this year.
And one other thing….Trunk open, Lat CLOSED!!!!
