POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Zaakiyah Brisker, founder of @southcentral.run, breaks down the ongoing ripple effect of the Barrio Athletics 5K run that was supposed to take place on Sept. 6 Leimert Park.

The 5K run was ultimately moved to Elysian Park.

“A handful of people arguing over a 5K became the story that defines South Central, while Leimert Park itself — home to roughly 12,000 people — got reduced to the backdrop for everybody else’s argument,” Brisker wrote.

Beneath social media, trends and noise — there is a deep history embedded into this conversation.

So, who gets to speak for LA?

A friend of mine introduced this Tagalog phrase to us at the 9am mass Dolores Mission last Sunday: Pakikipagkapwa. I texted him - I think during his homily - that i thought these are the Chicano parallel phrases: In Lak’Ech/Eres Mi Otro Yo. Especially for my family and friends and students and runners and teachers and organizers. Wednesday he drew Pakikipagkapwa in chalk on our rear wall in the backyard.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to capture @suprmarkt ‘s grand opening on Slauson. The hospitality was incredible from the staff to the vendors, the in-store food selection was top tier and the music from the DJs brought everyone together for dance and connection.

I’m grateful for the new people I met and memories made (not all captured). Congrats to Olympia and team. Be sure to check out @suprmarkt - a low cost organic grocery story located in South Central LA.
