The Archaeology of Trinity
“When Nature Won’t, Pluto Will”: The Natural Laxative of the 1900s.
We recently recovered a base of a 1900s Pluto Water Bottle. The base (image 3) depicts a very distinct image of Pluto, the Roman God of the Underworld. This artifact is a part of a 1900s Pluto Water glass bottle. The water was sourced from the Pluto Spring in French Lick, Indiana, and was mainly sold to guests at the French Licks Springs Hotel. The hotel also offered spa baths in the mineral water. Guests flocked to the Resort and Spa to experience the effects of Pluto Water. The water became increasingly popular for its advertised health benefits. In the early 1920s, the company began to sell the water nationally. Consumers visited their local pharmacy/drug store and were able to buy Pluto Water straight off the shelves. The water contained active ingredients of magnesium sulfate and sodium sulfate. Researchers later discovered the water contained a dangerous amount of lithium, which resulted in health issues for consumers. Pluto Water was pulled off the shelves in 1971, you can still visit the French Licks Springs Hotel, but don’t drink straight from the Spring!

The Archaeology of Trinity

We have two excellent new exhibits created by graduating seniors Zoe Flores and Adam Kingery. Stop by the Sociology and Anthropology department to see them! We will be taking a break from research over the summer, but look for new research and exhibits in the fall.
