“I found the relationship between the Erewhon Hailey Bieber Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie and the Sherry Shriner orgone blaster to be productive and interesting.”

Sherry Shriner was the anonymous leader of a prolific online cult in the MySpace age. She was the proprietrix of countless websites scrying accounts of demon-alien-reptiles walking among us and recipes for DIY orgone blasters, which if you didn’t know are blocks of sparkling resin capable of intercepting insidious spiritual electromagnetic forces, like Wi-Fi. A cupcake tin is ideal, but smoothie cups work just fine.

Such were the wayside convictions of the aughts, when pseudoscience, obsession, and conspiracy inexorably collided with the internet. But to what extent can we metabolize it all, let alone exercise free will? In the latest installment for our Artists at Work series, Alex Heilbron (@a.p.heilbron) spoke with fellow artist Scott Benzel (@scottbenzel) about Shriner, AI and Ouija boards, the ouroboric nature of information networks, and the “disembodied voice” that breaches the technological unknown.

“People always ask why I care so much about art in homes.
This is why. Same architecture. Same hallway. Completely different feeling.

Art isn’t the last thing you add to a house, it’s often the thing that gives it a soul.” Curated by Arushi Kapoor @arushikapoor1 for Art House Staging

I only work with real artists because I believe homes deserve more than mass-produced décor. They deserve stories, craftsmanship, and something that makes you pause.

Two hallways. Two vibes. Endless possibilities.

“Pundit Dream” on view through March 14th at Vasa Studio Gallery. Saturdays 12-4pm & by appointment.

In ancient Sanskrit the word Pundit (or Pandit) was used to describe a person with great knowledge or ability in a specific discipline. In India the word is still used as an honorific, for example, Pandit Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury (Ravi Shankar). By definition every artist in this exhibition is a Pundit, and every artwork that is exhibited in the exhibition is a Pundit Dream. By dream I do not mean the nighttime workings of the subconscious but instead as a term for ‘Aspirations’. Aspiration for a better world, a better future, a better self, the list of possible aspirations is infinite. A ‘Pundit Dream’ is foremost an act of great idealism, the ultimate belief that acting or performing or making something in the world will have profound consequences and benefits.

The Pundit Dream is also a ‘MacGuffin’ (a plot device, like a physical object, secret document, or ideal, that drives a story forward by motivating characters to act, but is ultimately irrelevant in itself to the plot’s resolution.) in the 1959 episode of the television series ‘Perry Mason’ entitled ‘A Shattered Dream’, Perry defends a world renowned gemstone expert charged with murder who attempts to cleave a raw 1000 carat diamond and fails. This dream to cleave the diamond into two perfect halves, making it ten times more valuable, becomes an interesting metaphor for contemporary artistic production.

The 16 Artists in the exhibition; Alex Heilbron, Kristopher Raos, Catherine Wang, Jack Slavin, Vasa Mihich, Niko Chodor, Rosa Sarholz, Rita McBride, Matt Paweski, Nicole-Antonia Spagnola, Alex Lukas, Michael Bala, Kristin Posehn, Glen Rubsamen, Bedros Yeretzian, Chadwick Rantanen are all in the business of great idealism, profound consequences and infinite aspirations.
