It’s been a long journey, and the crazy part is that it’s only just begun. A lot of hands played a part in bringing this project to life. This has certainly been the most difficult thing I have done in my short time on this earth. We finally opened, and are wrapping up the first month of operating. I’m learning how to take a step back and try to enjoy what I’m doing. But unfortunately, I wasn’t raised that way. As Kobe said, “Job’s not finished.” Phase ll is about to be kicked into gear.

Houston kids Houston dreams

Really proud of my friend @gregalmostperez on the grand opening of his new Mexican-American cocktail bar @concreterosebar in downtown Houston.

We grew up on opposite sides of town but connected when I laid roots for @khoibarbecue in The Near Northside five years ago. Greg grew up in the neighborhood and still operates his first bar - @trashpandadrinkingclub - there.

We were around the same age and quickly became friends through a shared love for food, music, and art. Greg was in tune with his Mexican background and had a genuineness in representing his culture. He made me feel welcome in the neighborhood from the get go.

I remember he showed me the space that would become Concrete, in April 2025. I remember how unique the concrete martini glass columns were, and how the front door opened up right to the newly renamed Daikin Field.

The next twelve months, I would travel to Mexico City with Greg. Checking out bars and neighborhoods in CDMX that inspired him. We’d analyze and discuss the drinks, the decor, the glasses, the art, the vibes. I got to accompany him to the artisanal market to buy native Mexican cups for mezcal. To street taco joints serving abogado tacos - cuts from the cows head and tongue.

Seeing the final product and how it all came together now, especially knowing all the work and thoughtfulness that’s been put in - like working with local designers and artists like @oldmanmikey_ - is special and inspiring. Congrats to Greg, his family, and the team on creating a Houston gem.
