$30,000+. A quarter panel scheduled to be CUT OFF. 😳

That was the reality this Rivian owner was facing.

The conventional body shop repairs called for either removing the original quarter panel (entire uniside) or cutting and sectioning in a replacement. The customer simply wasn’t comfortable with either of those options—not only because of the nearly $20,000-$30,000 price tag, but because once that original panel is cut off, there’s no going back.

So instead, they made the trip all the way from NEW JERSEY to FLORIDA to see if I could save it. 🚙➡️🌴

Four days and MANY hours of extremely tedious metal work later…

✅ Original factory quarter panel SAVED
✅ Original factory paint PRESERVED
✅ NO drilling holes
✅ NO cutting or sectioning
✅ ALL factory welds left intact
✅ NO body filler
✅ NO repainting

The plastic bumper was also heavily damaged in the impact and the customer had already been advised that replacement would be necessary for perfect fit and alignment. They were completely comfortable living with the bumper damage for now and deciding on replacement later—my focus was strictly on saving and restoring the original metal quarter panel and paint.

Was this the easy way to repair it? Absolutely not.

But sometimes the goal isn’t finding the easiest repair—it’s finding the repair that preserves as much of the vehicle as possible.

Seeing how excited this customer was with the finished result made every hour invested worth it. They traveled from New Jersey to Florida with one goal: keep their Rivian original.

Mission accomplished. 🙌

THE CENTER COMES LAST. ⚔️

A body line dent will tempt you to attack the deepest point first.

DON’T.

Before I ever worry about the center, I ask myself:

Where did the energy go?

On this repair for @metroplexcustoms , the obvious crowns above and below the body line were only part of the story. There’s also a tremendous amount of stored energy IN the body line itself.

So first, I deal with the energy.

I blend.
I knock down.
I introduce lateral tension.
I break up and redistribute that stored energy.
Then I start building support with controlled pushes above and below the body line.

And even when I’m ready to work the line itself, I still don’t dive into the center.

I start outside of center and walk my tool tip inward in a controlled pattern.

Why?

Because I want that tight center to have somewhere to go. I want it moving freely, instead of forcing it and creating high spots, push marks, or unnecessary risk to the paint.

The deepest part of the dent doesn’t always need to be the first part you push.

Understand the energy.
Create support.
Give the metal somewhere to move.

Then earn your way to the center. ⚔️
