SURFACING | POIESIS QUARTET
🎉OUT NOW!

Praised by The New York Times for their “multifaceted artistry,” the multi-award winning (Banff, CAG, and Fischoff) Poiesis Quartet is one of today’s most in-demand quartets. Surfacing traces their artistic journey from the first work they performed (Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Calvary) to their first commissioned work (Kevin Lau’s Surfacing). The recording also includes works by Brian Raphael Nabors and Sky Macklay, alongside a traditional African-American spiritual arranged for four violins.

REPOST from @Flotation_Device_KBCS:
Tonight we celebrate Steve Reich's 90th birthday with one classic process-driven masterpiece plus one later, lesser-known work that showcases his interest in speech melody. We’ll assess his stature among the OGs of minimalism and among American composers in general. And we’ll contrast his beat-driven style with the sparser pseudo-repetitions in Morton Feldman’s Palais de Mari (preparatory to its October 7 traversal at @MeanyCenter by pianist Cristina Valdés). We'll also begin our Earshot Jazz Festival coverage with a preview of Lucian Ban and Mat Maneri’s Transylvanian Dance performance on October 9, including an exclusive interview with Lucian that delves into his unusual background as a Romanian-born, New York-based Downtown jazz pianist, and his approach to using Bartók’s famous field recordings of Eastern European folk music as an improvisational starting point.

Sunday, October 4, 10pm–Midnight PDT (GMT -7), on 91.3 @KBCS Bellevue/Seattle/Tacoma (streaming at KBCS.FM). Available in podcast format (with HQ audio) at Mixcloud.com. Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world with host Michael Schell.

The album, ‘The Holy Liftoff’ got a lovely review from CD Playlist. Here’s an excerpt:

“...Parts of the score were illustrated with cartoon figures and only sketchy musical notation, while others were carefully composed, making this work very much a collaborative one with the musicians. The music is fascinating and fun, and beautifully performed.”

The album, ‘The Holy Liftoff’ got a lovely review.

“...Claire Chase’s Density 2036 aspires to be the modern catalyst for the instrument’s next stage. Launched in 2013, the project is set to conclude in 2036, framing the centenary of its inspiration with a new, forward-looking body of work. Heterodox pieces like Riley’s The Holy Liftoff show that Chase is certainly on the right path.”

We made a thing!

“I am the Migration” is an hour long conversation with my dad Bob Stewart @thun.der9383 about the movement of black creatives across the country, how that shaped the flow and change of American music and its mirror in the movement of our own family - the forgotten stories, the holes in lineage we fill with sound and music.

We hear several of the 24 American Caprices along the way, 4 of which were commissioned along the theme of labor, movement and the railroad - by @yourclassicalmpr

Sunday night we celebrate the 65th birthday of Unsuk Chin, the preeminent living Korean composer (notwithstanding her long residence in Germany). We’ll sample her colorful, complex music in new recordings by @Anne_Sophie_Mutter, @Ensemble.Intercontemporain and the @BerlinPhil. We’ll also survey new albums by fellow Ligeti student Roberto Sierra, and by Roman Rofalski, Alexander Hawkins, Simon Nabatov, Henry Kaiser and Gordon Grdina's Nomad Trio. Plus, Marty Ehrlich pays tribute to Julius Hemphill in two new tribute and archival releases. And our “50 years ago in the avant-garde” feature will revisit a Gloria Coates string quartet and the ugly duckling of Stockhausen’s stage works: Sirius, dedicated “to the American pioneers on Earth and in Space”.

Sunday, July 12, 10pm–Midnight PDT (GMT -7), on 91.3 @KBCS Bellevue/Seattle/Tacoma (streaming at KBCS.FM). Available in podcast format (with HQ audio) at Mixcloud.com. Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world with host Michael Schell.
