Nearly a month ago, I took the Hippocratic Oath, and I began contemplating different captions for my images, such as ‘Reintroducing Dr. Omotanwa Gbadebo’ or ‘New title alert 🚨: Dr. Omotanwa Gbadebo.’ To be honest, I was in denial for the longest time.

The new title change and responsibilities took a while to settle on me. I had been a student for the longest, with people constantly asking, ‘Are you done?’ and ‘How come you are still in school?’ (By the way, these questions are the most annoying to ask medical students, especially those in federal universities in Nigeria; we follow a different calendar, and we finish whenever we finish.) The title only seemed real when I swore the Hippocratic Oath; that was when I knew the medical school journey was truly over, and a new race was about to begin.

Before I embark on this new race, I want to reflect on my medical school journey and emphasize that it definitely wasn’t an easy one. It was traumatic, to say the least—reading and taking breaks to cry because, in heaven’s name, how are you supposed to know all of this in such a short time? With the craziest academic schedule of 8 am to 6 pm and then going for call hours to resume work the following day (you still have to find time to read within these nonexistent hours), it was challenging. But facing the challenge was fun; at the end of every academic year, there’s always a massive celebration among my colleagues because another milestone has been achieved, another hill climbed..
