Die poetische Intervention ist Teil des Festivals Southern Lights on Tour in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Projekt THE PAST IS NOT ANOTHER COUNTRY: ARCHIVE ANDERS MACHEN.

📅 Montag, 26. Oktober, um 18 Uhr im DFF (Dauer: ca. eine Stunde)

“Niko Njiani…Nimefika” is the project of SMUS 2025 Research-Based Artist (RBA) Alma Simba, a historian, poet and sound artist. Through her work, she presents women’s experiences on different modes of transport in urban Tanzania.

The works in Niko Njiani…Nimefika were produced through collaboration and community. Alma Simba engaged women through interviews, group discussions and travel, moving across diverse neighbourhoods and sites Goba, Buguruni, Tabata, Mikocheni, Stone Town, Ilemela and more. These geographies reflected the varied infrastructures, temporalities, and social dynamics that shape women’s physical movement across urban and coastal Tanzania. Rather than extracting stories, the process centred on exchange and collaboration, where listening, recording, and composing with participants formed a crucial and central focus of the project. Isanzu Community Perspectives on Ancestral Remains Restitution to Tanzania by Dr. Maximilian Chami and Alma Simba

In Tanzania, the Isanzu people’s ancestors were removed during German colonial expeditions, disrupting cultural practices of care, burial and ritual. This case study centres the voices of the Isanzu community in exploring the restitution of these ancestral remains, highlighting how community-defined practices of respect and ritual shape the process.

This case study examines how community-defined practices of care, respect and ritual shaped the return process, challenging top-down, expert-led approaches. It traces advocacy strategies, negotiations with museums and legal frameworks, and the integration of traditional knowledge into decisions about handling and reburial.

As it stands, there has been no further move towards restitution. The resounding recommendation from Alma and Max’s research around community perspectives, and the commissioned report, is that the Isanzu community, and others, should continuously be involved in framing how restitution of their human ancestors happens.

Niko Njiani… Nimefika reminded us why women’s voices remain the heartbeat of our cultural landscape. As Alma Simba ( @aa_noun )said, “to share the poems, sounds and voices with you today is such a gift…” Swipe to read the whole quote...
All love to curator Getrude Malizeni ( @mama_mishe ) for shaping such a thoughtful, grounded experience.
