“Our parents are people too, living their lives for the first time.
Let them find their own way back.“

“My parents met on Valentine’s Day in 1990. That morning, Mom told a friend, ‘Aaj koi dekhne aa raha hai. Agar baat ban gayi toh cute hoga kyunki Valentine’s Day hai.’ That evening, she saw Dad and knew she would marry him. She was 23, he was 28, and three months later, they were married.
I grew up as their only child and saw the disagreements at home.
When I was 15, my parents separated. I had sensed it, so I felt more relieved than shocked. I believed two happy homes were better than one unhappy one. After the divorce, they barely spoke.
But in 2021, something changed. During the second wave of COVID, Mom was alone in isolation in India. She wanted to make peace with the past. She asked me to reconnect her with Dad. After years, they spoke.
The following month, my Dadi passed away. In 2022, Mom visited her Delhi home for the first time since the divorce. Dad heard she was there and asked her to call him. They spoke that June and slowly became friends.
Later that year, I overheard Dad laughing with Mom on a video call. Hearing them laugh together again made my inner child so happy.
Then last year, Dad came to India, and the three of us were at Dadi’s house together for the first time in almost 15 years. On the wall was an old photograph of my parents holding hands. Dadi had kept it there even after their divorce. I thought it would be cute if they recreated it.
So, 35 years later, they stood in the same spot and held hands again. I took a picture and video, never imagining it would go viral.
Mom was touched by the love the video received. Dad wasn’t happy at first, he asked, ‘Why did you post this without asking me?’ Once I explained what that moment meant to me, he understood.
Today, they live separate lives, but they’re friends. Dad still picks Mom up from the airport. They call, give advice and show up for important moments, including my MBA graduation.
Their marriage didn’t work out. But they found a different way to be a family.”
