"Sunlight After Dark" is a surreal multimedia performance about men who want to privatize the sky. Featuring Reed Rushes as their drag king persona Stan alongside a stellar cast, the show follows the real-life co-founder of geoengineering startup Reflect Orbital, who promises “sunlight after dark.”

Reflect Orbital promises “sunlight after dark” through mirrors placed in Earth’s orbit. You can buy light, block light, redirect light, simply through an app on your phone.

Join Stan in the meteorologist’s room. A world of lust, money, and men. Strap in. They’re harvesting sunshine, and there’s a storm brewing…

Through drag, dance, live video, and slapstick humor, Reed Rushes deep-dives into the world of venture capitalists and their environmental impact, using this research to build a unique universe.

“Whilst it centres Cumbria, it speaks to broader questions about how communities remember, adapt and endure. Time and time again, the artists reveal value accumulating in overlooked places: seeds taking root amongst rubble, forms of knowledge persisting beyond official histories, identities flourishing beyond the limits imposed upon them.

What happens in the margins? According to ‘Rough Terrain’, quite a lot. Things grow there. Things survive there. Things accumulate. The exhibition does not offer definitive answers. Instead, it demonstrates that the margins are never empty. They are the rough terrain from which new possibilities emerge.”

Thank you to @corridor8 and @chrisalton for their thoughtful and expansive write up of our exhibition Rough Terrain - which closes to the public today, but is open by appointment until July 3rd.

Please email us on enquiries@art-gene.co.uk if you or a group would like a tour for the exhibition. Or join us tomorrow afternoon and Tuesday 30th for workshops with Iona Ford and Juliet Klottrup!

Radical Queer Craft Exhibition
✨ Launch Night ✨ 1/2

Back in February, we opened the Radical Queer Craft Exhibition for an evening and a day - to showcase the incredible craft work of queer artists and makers across the North West!

From powerful stitched patchworks, crotchet, print, up-cycling, woodwork and handmade lampshades filling the space, to live music from local harpist @vi0la_fey, the launch set the tone for a project rooted in creativity, resistance, and community care.

This exhibition marked just one moment in our year-long journey of workshops, skill-sharing, and making together across the North West.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared their work with us, and made it unforgettable! We hope to curate more in the future! Keep on keeping on (and keep crafting!) ♥️🏳️‍⚧️✨🌈

Very pleased to share a new publication developed with Jwllrs, tracing the echoes of their 𝚂𝙴𝙴𝙳 event in Morecambe last year.

As fragments assembled from smartphone images, often taken under Jwllrs’ 10x zoom instruction, the publication follows a kind of peripheral vision. I stayed close to the backstage of preparation, moving between the kitchen and the event with the artists, where processes of cooking, sourcing, and sharing became inseparable from the work itself.

Spending time within these moments offered a way of learning through ingredients, gestures, and conversations shaped by each artist’s practice and relationship to food and place. The event extended into discussions during and after the day, including a workshop hosted with Amy @a.c.dickson , we returned to these moments through spiral-timelines of food, compost, labour and value, tracing migrations and the lingering paths food leaves behind.

As a publication, it reflects my ongoing interest in how singular, indexical images can be reconfigured into spatio-temporal narratives. Screenshots, details and statistical nouns sit alongside one another, forming shifting relations, an unfinished catalogue that resists fixing the event in place, instead allowing it to continue becoming.

𝚂𝙴𝙴𝙳
The book brings together a five-course research evening of food-based performances by Abigail Hampsey @abihampsey, Alistair Debling @aadebling, Jamie Jenkinson @jamie_jenkinson_ , Nandal Seo @nandal_seo and On Yee Lo @triplegluten, conceived as a catalyst for future food and art collaborations, and for thinking sustainability within the Morecambe Bay region.

Designed by Can Yang for @jwllrs_ .

The publication will soon be available to view, purchase, and enquire about through Jwllrs, and will also be presented at Outland Book Fair (17–19 April). 💌

“It’s London Marathon month, so it’s best to get out of the capital lest ye be trampled underfoot and then told how running ‘isn’t just a physical journey, it’s an emotional one as well’ by 32-year-olds having an identity crisis. Anyway, thanks to ‘Not London’, you’ve got better places to be! “.

This is how Verity @veritybabbsart opens Not London this month, kicking off your guide to 10 must-see April exhibitions (that aren’t in London).
