#ThrowbackThursday: Last week, we hosted a High-Level Policy Dialogue on advancing financial inclusion for persons with disabilities in #Rwanda.

“Financial inclusion is not only about access to services, but it is also about dignity, independence, and equal opportunity. It is about enabling persons with disabilities to participate fully in the economy and plan for their future,” said Beth Nasiforo Mukarwego, Chairperson of the National Union of Disability Organizations of Rwanda (NUDOR)

#AFR15: Digitizing Payments

Since 2018, AFR has supported the creation and growth of #Rwanda’s first fully interoperable payment system - the Rwanda National Digital Payment System (eKash by RSwitch).

By connecting banks, microfinance institutions, mobile money providers, and FinTechs on a single platform, this shared infrastructure has:

💳 Accelerated the shift toward a cashless economy
⚡ Reduced transaction time and costs
👥 Enabled over 1.5 million Rwandans to use digital person-to-person payments

This milestone was made possible through strong collaboration with @_rswitch and the @centralbankrw

#AFR15: 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Since 2012, Access to Finance Rwanda (AFR) has been the custodian of the FinScope Survey—providing reliable, demand-side data that has guided key policy decisions and spurred market innovation in Rwanda’s financial sector.

From the rollout of Umurenge SACCOs to the growth of digital financial services and inclusive insurance, FinScope insights have been central to reshaping financial inclusion in hashtag#Rwanda.

In this video, John Rwirahira, Ivan Murenzi, Herbert Asiimwe, and Jean Claude Gaga reflect on how FinScope has served as a powerful tool for measuring financial inclusion and driving impact.

#AFR15: 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭

Over the past 15 years, our success has been anchored in our unique Market Systems Development (MSD) approach.

Instead of treating symptoms, we tackle the root causes that constrain hashtag#Rwanda’s financial sector, then work with partners to catalyze lasting change.

Since 2010, our work has helped over 4.5 million adult Rwandans access and use new or improved financial services. Today, 96% of adults in Rwanda are financially included - a milestone we’re proud to have contributed to.

Our CEO @jbiyacu, and Board Chair David Ferrand reflect on how the MSD approach has shaped AFR’s journey and impact.

On Wednesday, Access to Finance Rwanda (AFR) signed a Gender Equity Charter with Women In Finance Rwanda (WIFR), underscoring our commitment to advancing women’s inclusion across #Rwanda’s financial sector.

By signing this charter, AFR reaffirms its dedication to join hands with fellow WIFR members to promote and achieve gender parity at all levels of the financial ecosystem.

As part of this ongoing collaboration, four young women employed at AFR have been awarded full scholarships to undertake a financial certification course in Sustainable and Responsible Investment delivered by the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI).

The WIFR Foundation empowers women professionals in finance to connect, learn, and grow through peer-to-peer support, community engagement, and career development opportunities.

At AFR, we have made significant internal progress toward diversity and inclusion within our governance. Today, women represent 50% of both our Board of Directors and Senior Management Committee, and we are actively working to extend this commitment across our broader organisational structure.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive financial sector is key to delivering real value to Rwanda’s economy and its people.

Happy International Women’s Day #IWD2025

A flower is just a symbolic gesture of showing respect, appreciation and gratitude, but we all know that women and mothers in our lives deserve way beyond that.

Let us all accelerate actions for Women Economic Empowerment and Women Financial Inclusion.
