Elizabeth’s film, “Sunscreen” will be part of an upcoming installation screening
⋆｡°✩

Working primarily in painting and artist’s books, Elizabeth Allen-Cannon explores how the self is reproduced, divided, and contained, and the tensions that arise between one’s inner and outer worlds. She is interested in the relationship between the self and landscape, and nature’s capacity to hold both emotion and memory. Her work engages the drama between framing device and pictorial space; the real and the abstract.
In addition to her artistic practice, Elizabeth works as an adjunct professor at Eastern Florida State College and directs Causeway, an artist-run space in Cocoa Beach, FL.

This animation, entitled “Sun Screen,” considers reproduction (both in the sense of making a copy and giving birth), the self, and its dual capacity for external duplication and inner divisibility. Originating from colored paper and text, “Sun Screen” is a result of the interventions and irregularities that arise from transferring one medium into another, and imagines such translations as a generative landscape. Female hands (belonging to the artist/author) hold a series of pages, each one dissolving until an original source is revealed. Through recursive imagery, this animation considers the self and its capacity for endlessness. To the outside world, a person is many things to many people—i.e. mother, worker, citizen. We are told to look within to locate authenticity, only to find our interiority riddled with contradiction. Can we source a singular origin of self? Or do our external roles create such entanglements that a true self cannot be recovered?

From Elizabeth: “Taking care of my child has kept the notion of transformation top of mind. She is always transforming, but in a sense, she has always been who she is. I find comfort in the fact that both are true: we constantly change in life, but it’s a spiral—a slow, inward rotation toward self-knowledge.” 🌀

Film recommendation: I recently watched Asparagus (1979) by Suzan Pitt. Amazing.
