POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Our corner of the canal catches light
that moves slowly across the water.

Wildlife in the reeds.
Boats drifting past like quiet stories.
Moments that ask you to pause.

Weekday mornings belong to calm.
Soft voices. First coffees.
Steam rising in the still air.

We love the hustle and buzz of weekends,
but maybe, just maybe,
we love weekday mornings the most.

Because Canal Street is more than the view.
It’s the people who breathe life into it.

Regulars who feel like old friends.
A team that brings warmth and energy to every day.
Creative souls like Amanda,
who can hold a fleeting moment still
and show us what we might otherwise miss.

She has a rare gift
for capturing the spirit of a place
and the people who shape it.

Thank you, Amanda.
Thank you to our community.
Thank you to everyone who walks through the door
for coffee, cake, conversation, and calm.

Here’s to people.
Here’s to place.
And always… here’s to coffee and cake.

Tomorrow morning,
when the canal is quiet again,
we’ll be right here. ☕️

We’ve gone back and forth on whether to write this.

We never want to sound like we’re moaning, and we don’t want to shame anyone. But we also want to be honest with our community, because we’re at a bit of a crossroads 😔

From the very beginning, the cups you drink from at Canal St have mattered to us ☕️ They’re part of the experience. Part of the ritual. Part of what makes this place feel like here, not anywhere.

Our ceramics are made locally by James at @apostrophe_ceramics. They’re handmade, thoughtful, and intentionally imperfect. They take time to make and they cost more than mass-produced alternatives, but they reflect what we believe in: quality, collaboration, and supporting local craft.

Recently, a significant number of these cups have been taken from the café. Enough that we simply can’t absorb the loss.

Independent cafés run on incredibly tight margins. Repeated losses like this have a real impact, and if they continue we would have no choice but to move permanently to cheaper, mass-produced cups. Even writing that makes us sad.

For now, while new ceramics are being made, we’ll be using Husk cups as a temporary solution. They are durable, reusable and responsibly made, and the black and beige fit our space. They allow us to keep serving great coffee thoughtfully while our handmade ceramics are being replaced.

We’re sharing this not to point fingers, but to ask for a moment of thought 🙏🏼 Every cup, plate and piece of cutlery in an independent café has been chosen with care and paid for with hard-earned money. When something disappears, it genuinely matters.

If you love independent places, local makers and spaces that feel considered and human, please help us protect them. Cafés, pubs and restaurants are closing at an alarming rate, and community support really does make the difference 🤍❤️

Thank you for being part of ours 🙏🏼 Message from Canal St café about handmade ceramic cups being taken, impact on the business, temporary Husk cups, and supporting local makers and independent cafés
