SAD BUT SENSIBLE! The Australian Institute of Architects has announced it will no longer participate in the 2020 Venice Architecture Biennale, scheduled to begin in August.

In a statement, the Institute said, “The rapidly changing and escalating situation regarding COVID-19 has made it impossible for us to plan for the exhibition, as the health and safety of our staff, members, partners and volunteers is our main priority. “We know that COVID-19 is presenting architects with significant financial and economic challenges. Therefore we are going to reallocate our resources to fund initiatives to help support our members as they navigate through this crisis.

We thank our Creative Directors Tristan Wong and Jefa Greenaway, and the entire creative team, for their hard work and commitment to the project. They have come up with a truly inspiring response to the theme of ‘how will we live together?’ and we look forward to working with them to showcase this work in other ways when it is safe to do so. #venice #covi̇d19 #venicearchitecturebiennale #venicearchitecturebiennale #venicebiennale2020 #australia #australianarchitecture #indigenousarchitecture #inbetween #tristanwong #jefagreenaway #elizabethgrant #jordymiliken

Over the weekend group of us headed to Sarsfield in East Gippsland, an area where so many people have suffered big losses during this bushfire season- some have lost absolutely everything, some their sheds, in some homes we could see fire burns literally on people’s front porches. Over the last 2 days we volunteered on 4 different properties- clearing areas, cutting trees and mowing. It felt good being there and helping out, meeting the locals and hearing their stories. We did all this through @tradies4fac - if you are interested in helping out as well, go to their page and reach out.

In|between – Call for Submissions
The creative team for the Australian Pavilion at the 17th Architecture Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia are seeking submissions of architectural works from Australia and the Pacific region that strengthen the cultural understanding between non-indigenous and First Nations people.
If you know or are involved with any projects in these regions that respond to the thematic, the creative team want to hear from you. Selected projects will feature at next year’s Venice Biennale.
