Did you know that Aaron and I grew up on the same street in the Jewish neighborhood of Samarkand, Uzbekistan?

Years later, our journeys took us in different directions. I immigrated to the United States, while Aaron immigrated to Israel.

And today, here we are, reunited in the Bukharian Quarter of Jerusalem.

But this location is not random. It tells a much bigger story about the Bukharian Jewish diaspora, our migration, and the deep connection our community has maintained with Jerusalem for generations.

Different journeys, different countries, but the same roots

Did you know that Bukharian Jews decorated their sukkah with real, fresh fruit hanging from above?

Let me tell you why.

Sukkot, Bukharian style, was an experience for all your senses.

The walls were covered with beautiful handmade suzani that women had prepared for 6 month prior. Fresh grapes, pomegranates, and other fruits hung as decorations. Raihon, Central Asian basil, and colorful flowers filled the sukkah with their scent.

But there was one thing that wasnโ€™t so easy to find in Uzbekistan: the etrog and lulav.

Etrogim and lulavim had to travel long distances to reach Central Asia. They were so difficult to obtain that sometimes an entire family shared just one set.
