It’s been a year of painting with oil paint and I feel like I still have so much to learn. It challenges me to be extremely present and to have a kind of patience I didn’t have before. It’s taught me to slow down considerably. To put things away and bring them out later to look with a fresh eye. I don’t often have a romantic life of being in studio painting all the time, but when I do get the time, it is very romantic and I am very grateful to it. What a delicious thing.

I have built my art business by showing up online, sharing my process, and selling my work consistently. I still believe in the power of that. But as I’ve grown older and continued developing as an artist, I’ve had to ask myself harder questions. Is this work engaging with the critical thinking, curiosity, and depth that I believe should exist within my practise? Over the years I’ve learnt that building a sustainable art practise requires a different kind of balance and that traditional business models don’t fit the way artists need to work.
Artists need space for failure, experimentation, and obsession. Here’s a little more detail on how I have pivoted my business over the years in order to develop my practise while maintaining an income from it.

Hustle culture promised us freedom and success; in reality this has translated to longer hours, financial insecurity, and very little time to rest…Our bodies send us conflicting messages, they say to us “I don’t think I can survive this” but also “I don’t think I can survive without this.” And both feel true.

Been sitting with these swimmer girls for a few months now. I’ve been thinking of how to resolve the girl on the left but also very at peace with being able to spend more time with the work; I know the resolution will come. If there is anything I’ve learnt this past year in life as well as painting (is there a difference?) is that most times it better to sit and find moments to stop instead of forcing an outcome ✨⭐️

My interest in Kamyar Bineshtarigh’s practice recently escalated when I heard he had been making regular visits to fellow artists’ studios, extracting elements from their walls and floors that would then form part of his own developing body of work.

What a curious thing to be doing.

The studio is often venerated as a sacred space, an incubator for creative thought and, at times, the site of artistic ‘genius’. What then does it mean for Bineshtarigh to re-appropriate these foundations, isolating them as artworks in their own right and assembling them within the white walls of the gallery? While the link between studio and gallery may seem inevitable, the site of production was never actually intended to enter the exhibition space itself. Conceptually, it’s very interesting!

These wall and floor fragments carry with them the marks, gestures, erasures and more abstractly, the EYES and memories, that shape each artist’s creative journey. They hold within them a passage of time, fixed within a single encapsulated object (of sorts), now brought together on the fresh walls of Southern Guild’s gallery space at the Waterfront.

Familiar names and practices will appear. I’m referring to Brett Charles Seiler (@brettseiler), Mmangaliso Nzuza (@mmangalisonzuza), Boytchie (@boytchie_), Guy Simpson (@guysimpson_), Jane Alexander, Mary Sibande (@marysibande) and Lawrence Lemaoana (@lawrence_lemaoana), Vusumzi Nkomo (@aph_ekapa), Dominique Cheminais (@domini_chem) AND MANY MANY MORE! An orchestra of artists with their studio samples as instruments and Bineshtarigh their conductor.

The fittingly titled, ‘Group Show’ opens tonight - I don’t think you’ll want to miss it.
