HEMPFEST or FREEDOM RALLY — what the hell do YOU call it?

If you grew up around Boston, you probably ain’t sayin’, “Hey guys, wanna attend the Boston Freedom Rally this weekend?”

Nah.

You were goin’ to HEMPFEST.

Now, technically, the official name has long been the Boston Freedom Rally. But “Hempfest” got so wicked common that everybody used it — local media, people around the city, even the Boston Police Department. Back in 2006, BPD straight-up called it the “Fall Freedom Rally (Hemp Fest).”

So if you’ve been callin’ it Hempfest for the last 20-somethin’ yeahs, you didn’t just make that shit up.

But there’s a reason MassCann calls it the Freedom Rally. This wasn’t supposed to just be a big pahhty on the Common. It came outta cannabis activism, protesting the laws, and people fighting for reform long before Massachusetts had dispensaries on every otha corner.

Still, old habits die hahd.

So I walked around the Common askin’ everybody the most Boston question of the weekend:

HEMPFEST?

Or FREEDOM RALLY?

Let’s see what Boston fuckin’ calls it.
