😬 #FishFriday WEEK 5: Lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus)

ID: Elongated, torpedo-built ambush predator! Mottled brown/gray/green for reef camouflage, a wide mouth with 18 sharp teeth. They grow fast and big —> up to 5 ft and 80 lbs, living 20+ years. Found on rocky reefs 30–300 ft down.

Fun fact: Some lingcod turn up with turquoise-blue flesh instead of white. It’s not disease, it’s biliverdin, a bile pigment that leaks into the muscle. It cooks out white!

Underwater: Lingcod are sit-and-wait hunters, holding still on the reef and striking bottom fish (including smaller lingcod), squid, octopus, and crab.

CCFRP (California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program) puts volunteer anglers on the water with scientists to track fish populations inside and outside our local Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Every fish measured and released becomes real data shaping how these reefs get managed. After nearly two years of planning, collaboration, and installation, the transformation of room 2110 in the Earth and Physical Sciences Building is complete.

Long known as “The Aviary” for the paper cranes that once hung overhead, the space has been reimagined as “The Aquarium,” featuring a crocheted marine life installation and new acrylic poster wall displays that showcase the breadth of research taking place across our Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The display features photos contributed by faculty, alongside carefully selected imagery.

More than a study space, the Aquarium serves as a hub for our community-building events, student engagement, and connections between students, faculty, and staff. We’re grateful to everyone who contributed photos, ideas, and expertise to help bring this project to life. Special thanks to Magali Billen, Tessa Hill, Kari Cooper, Ryosuke Motani, Susann Pinter, and Abbey Dias for their contributions!

You saw them in @the_last_forests_project film, and now the story is out in @natgeo! A small constellation of 18 sunflower sea stars was found in August of 2025 in a small cove in Sonoma County, the largest and southernmost population of Pycnos found in the state since seastar wasting disease decimated over 99% of them in California. @underwaterpat joined up with @the_last_forests_project’s @marco_mazza and @abbeydias to document the first ever “Pycnopalooza,” lead by featured-in-the-film scientist @rachaelkarm.

Research divers collected water samples, genetic tissues and ecological data about these stars, which may hold keys to sunflower star repopulation efforts as kelp restoration work continues to ramp up. Until more “Seasquatches” are found, you can watch these super Pycnopalooza sea stars in action in The Last Forests Project on YouTube, and/or read more about this discovery at our link in bio!

For National Safe Boating Week, we're spotlighting the UC Davis Boating and Diving Safety (BDS) team to bring you expert tips that keep marine scientists — and you — safe on the water! 🌊⚓

Want to boat like a @ucdavis researcher? Follow these three foundational mottos taught by our BDS team:

🌬️ 1. "Bow to the Forces" – Don't fight nature. When approaching a dock or recovering a research buoy, point your bow into the wind or current. Let the elements work with you, not against you.

🔄 2. "Helm Before Throttle" – Stuck in a tight spot? Always turn your wheel (the helm) before you give it gas (the throttle). This makes your turns incredibly tight and predictable.

🐢 3. "Slow is Pro" – True skill is shown at low speeds. When docking or approaching a tight space, moving slowly and with intention gives you greater control and time to react.

Not every day you get conditions like this in Northern California. Note the Purple Sea Urchins encroaching on this patch of reef, competing with the abalone for food (kelp). In small patches this is a natural process - purple urchins are an important part of the marine ecosystem in the right numbers. However, in the past decade over 95% of Northern California’s kelp forests have been mowed down by a severe overpopulation of Purple Urchins. This has unfortunately left many abalone populations to starve and led to the closure of the recreational abalone fishery. As sad as it is to see this devastation, it’s amazing to see all the hard work and progress put in by the community, scientists, tribal members, and fishermen/fisherwomen to help restore the kelp!
