Oklahoma Girls State 2026!!! 🍓🫐

My FAVORITE week of the summer each year! Girls State is an organization sponsored by the American Legion Auxillary that teaches young women (specifically rising seniors in high school) about the United States government. But more importantly, their learn the power of their voice, they gain confidence in themselves, and they truly embrace the beauty of stepping out of their comfort zones with grace.

First they elect city officials, such as mayor, and then county, district, and state positions such as governor, labor commissioners, superintendent of public instruction, etc. They learn that those they elect represent THEM and who they elect matters.

The delegates also get to write their own legislature to present in our mock house and senate which are positions that the delegates also elect!

During one of our staff meetings at the very beginning, we were all told to ‘remember our why.’ Throughout the week I’d have these little moments where I looked around and just watching these delegates shine, that’s my why. It is watching these incredibly brave, intelligent, and inspiring young women truly flourish. It is watching them discover the power of their voice, uncover new depths of friendship, uplift and support one another, and advocate for themselves. That is my why.

All while I am simply a guiding hand throughout this week. We laugh until our stomachs hurt, we sing until we lose our voices, we make friends that last a lifetime, and by the end of the week we tear up as we have to say goodbye.

The counselors, education staff, and auxiliary members at this camp pour their heart and souls into these delegates and we treasure it each year. This week long government camp that I was so upset my dad signed me up for my junior year of high school (I didn’t know what it was or the impact it would have on me haha!) is now my pride and joy to take part in each summer. (My dad takes credit for my love for OKGS every time I mention it. Lol!)

To my Bonham Berries, gosh, I am SO proud of you. Go out in the big world and be those amazing leaders that I know you are. I love you! 🍓
