September is sepsis awareness month. I’ve been reflecting on my journey and the questions I get most often. One: What are the symptoms of sepsis? First, sepsis is not an infection; it’s a reaction. Symptoms include chills, confusion, reduced urine output, low or high body temperature, rapid heart rate, and an overwhelming feeling of something being terribly wrong. (I asked Scott if I was dying three times.)

Two: Are more surgeries needed? Yes, I had a minor procedure on my “finger” to shave down the bone. It already feels better, but I’ve been avoiding the sedated surgeries because the thought of going back to the hospital terrifies me. I still have the staghorn kidney stone, the one we had surgery on was on the other side, and it was trying to move out, so it needed to be addressed first. I’ve also been avoiding the dreaded colonoscopy. The process is eerily similar to the kidney stone surgery, and frankly, I don’t want to go through it.

Three: What’s happening with prosthetics? I’m on hold for my hand until the medical codes change so that my insurance can cover a functional prosthetic instead of just a silicone vanity hand. I’m hopeful for new year updates. For my feet, I’m almost healed up, and we’ll start the process for silicone toes. We’re just waiting for my skin (a couple spots that take the most pressure keep breaking down) to be healed enough. I’m still incredibly grateful to be present in all the important things in life, like parents’ weekend. ❤️
