HAPPY 90th BIRTHDAY TO MY MOM @egrayzel !
Meet the only 90-year-old who takes ballet, hikes, cooks healthy meals for herself, takes weekly classes in ceramics, conversational Hebrew, MELT, Feldenkreis, yoga, and does the daily NYT crossword puzzle.
For 20 years, she drove from NJ to PA 1.5 hours each way every week for sleepovers with my kids, and when I was sick, she showed up with pure love and pureed food. When my kids surpassed her Hebrew, she took classes and had a Bat-Mitzvah at 70. Iconic. Walk with her and you’ll learn about every plant, bird, and bug—up close. Sometimes too close. She has climbed Everest Base Camp. Kilimanjaro. 49 Adirondack peaks, and a Vermont 26er. She always wanted to take ballet—and in her 40’s she took a beginning ballet class with young girls (since there were none for adults) and even performed in the recital! She was married 30 years to my dad, then brave enough to find true love with Miki for 35 more. After he passed, an old college boyfriend, Jerry, found his way back to her. Her 90th birthday celebration wish was to take her four kids to her beloved Sils Maria in Switzerland—her heaven on earth. We did it, and it was pure magic.
I am endlessly grateful—and in awe—of this incredible woman I get to call Mom. Here’s to 90 years of courage, curiosity, adventure, and love. Drop your birthday wishes below—she deserves all of them. #90years #bestmomever @flatrockbrook

Andean people have worn ponchos for centuries in South America, and while there is no exact evidence as to where the first poncho was fabricated, what is clear is that ponchos are part of Peruvian heritage and culture. Ponchos have been used as offerings during burial ceremonies, even found in the Pre-Incan culture of Paracas from 2,000 years ago.

It is believed that the etymological source of the word Poncho comes from the Quechua word Punchu. The poncho or “punchu” is an outer layer designed to keep the body warm and dry and protected it from the sun. It has a geometric shape and a cut to put the head through, with no sleeves to give you free movement.

Nowadays ponchos are recognized worldwide as a stylish piece and many famous designers include ponchos in their collections!

#tbt to my first time in the pueblo that is now my second home in the world. 2013 was the first time I came to Peru, did a 13 day trek, which forever changed me.

Most people will never get a chance to visit this magical hidden gem, deep in the Andes. But you can come here with me!

Happy Juneteenth! On Monday, @natalie.dodson and I through-hiked the 30.2-mile Wildwood trail. Coming off of an underwhelming virtual graduation (though the support of my family made it far better than I could have imagined) and the frustration of a remote term/ general lack of action that is possible from a quarantined home, I wanted to do something to both culminate my college and use my platform to make positive change. I recognize my privilege as a white woman in CS, and the corresponding lack of resources towards CS education for young Black women. Since I will be greatly benefitting from my degree, I found it only fitting to dedicate my walk to @blackgirlscode. With the support of friends, family, and you all, I am proud to share we have collectively raised $1430.60 for Black girls’ CS education, largely through donations of $30.2 (the length of the trail; sorry if I didn’t tag you, I could only tag 20 people). THANK YOU. I am floored by the support we and young Black women received through this effort. Extraordinarily grateful to everyone who stepped up to contribute, and if you didn’t donate this time, think about how your privilege has benefited you next time. We are FAR from done rebalancing the years of injustices which have disadvantaged Black communities throughout our nation’s history. My employer will retroactively match donations up to 200% (I start in less than a month), so if you need someone to donate for you I would be happy to do so. Thank you, Wildwood, thank you, supporters, thank you, @blackgirlscode for a meaningful and memorable graduation. 🌲💚

Buying a monthly pass to her local Cryotherapy studio changed Abby’s life with multiple positive physical + mental health benefits for her. She immerses herself into the freezing cold cryo chamber for about four minutes which can get as cold as -160 degrees, and looks forward to it everyday. Well, almost everyday- she goes 6x a week.
