ℹ️ CONNECTIONS AS METHOD is informed by research, approaches, and perspectives from more than 60 international contributors from across the Arab Gulf and its adjecencies, drawing on the first year of The Um Slaim School—a pioneering initiative that emerges from the work of Riyadh-based Syn Architects and collaborators, as convened by Beatrice Leanza and Maryam AlNoaimi.

Featuring architects, artists, educators, urbanists, and writers, these interactions pilot methodologies of knowledge exchange to establish south-south networks of coproduction across disciplinary boundaries. Tracing transnational alliances, case studies, and thematics from the school’s first year, subjects of inquiry challenge established architectural canons, centering alternative spatial histories and material practices to address urgent ecological and social concerns.

Through newly commissioned texts, conversations, visual and theoretical essays, fieldwork, and tooling curricula, the volume rethinks architectural education as an integrated set of forms and modes of knowledge, nurturing processes of experimentation and research toward social debate, public imagining, and civic enlightenment.

In this third chapter of the Built/Unbuilt public program for the @saudipavilion and The Um Slam School, we dived into the interconnected challenges of recentering spatial pedagogies with notions of relational proximity and the situated conditions of urgent eco-social transitions across a wide geographical expanse.

Another reminder of how these P2P (practitioner2practitioner) moments of co-action, sharing and reflection sit at the heart of reforming educational pathways towards the building of creative alliances for the common good.

Thank you immensely to all these incredible speakers for their generosity, passion and dedication to rewiring architecture with a sense of care, purpose and networked solidarity.

Stay tuned for our last chapter in November!
And a major book coming ... 🔜

I can't but be humbled by the sheer energy and generosity of this group of people, the making of new relationships and alliances to rethink design as a truly planetary act.

Thanks once again to these #materialactivists (credit to Mohammed for the collective tag 😉) with whom we explored material landscapes as processes endowed with agentivity - situated, animated and connective - to reshape our future environments, and set forth new pedagogical approaches embracing cultural, geographical and generational crossings.

My deepest gratitude to all of them, Syn Architects @syn.architects , my curatorial co-conspirator Maryam Al Noaimi @maryamalnoaimi_ and most significantly the Architecture and Design Commission @saudipavilion for supporting these forward looking visions and a renewed sense of how educational and cultural platforms can be true agents of transformation.

Read more about all of them in the link in bio, and see you next in October for another exciting session!

🗓️ 📣 We are back!!!

We continue our collective groundwork with Syn Architects and the Um Slam Collective to prototype The Um Slam School this coming weekend - Sept 28/29 around Material Ecologies.

This part of the program invites designers, artists, and spatial researchers to explore how situated knowledge shapes our engagement with materials—not as passive substances to be used and discarded, but as active agents embedded in ecologies, histories, and land-based relations. Anchoring the conversation in material knowledge and experimentation, we ask: How do material landscapes carry memory, resistance, and meaning across contexts and generations? How can embodied, local ways of knowing shift our understanding of matter, authorship, and creation?

📌The research lab was led by the fantastic Studio Ossidiana - come discover the outcomes in Venice and join us September 28 for the public session at Palazzo Diedo with our fenomenal contributors:

Latifa Alkhayat, Mohammad Alfaraj, Collective for Architecture Lebanon / Shereen Doummar, Edouard Souhaid, Jia Yi Gu, Studio Eidola / Denizay Apusoglu and Jonas Kissling, Studio Ossidiana / Giovanni Bellotti and Alessandra Covini, Studio Raw Material / Dushyant Bansal and Priyanka Sharma, Studio Saffar / Kawther Alsaffar.

For three days over June 27-29 we started off the first of our co-creation and research sessions to collectively prototype a future pedagogical initiative—The Um Slam School.

With an absolutely inspiring and passionate group of practitioners from across the Arab World we delved into the role of archival projects and practice as a tool for reframing urban narratives and build novel stories of self-determination and knowledge making.

💥🙏To these amazing individuals and my indefatigable curatorial coconspirator @maryamalnoaimi_ THANK YOU (see them all in action by swiping through!).

In pictures and random order: day 1 co-working at the Saudi Pavilion, day 2 public program at Palazzo Diedo with the first of a series of thematic displays which accompany each session, this on archival projects and initiatives from 15 participants across the Gulf and beyond, performative spill by Bricklab to cement this moment ;)

Read about all of them in the downloadable pdf at the Saudi Pavilion website / 🔗 in bio.

Thanks to the fantastic partnership with Koozarch all that emerged from this convening will be published on their platform for open access.
