Abby Arevalo mounts her own battle in pursuit of an LPGA Tour card, kicking off her campaign in the new season in the Houma Golf Classic unfolding Tuesday at the Ellendale Country Club in Houma, Louisiana Tuesday.

The $55,000, 72-hole championship also marks the start of the Women’s All Pro Tour (WAPT) and the PXT Race to Stage II where the top five players after the grueling 13-stage circuit will advance outright to Stage II of the LPGA Tour Qualifying this year.

Pauline del Rosario won the WAPT’s Central Arkansas Open leg last year but Arevalo, who also launched her pro career with a victory on the Cactus Tour, and her fellow ICTSI player fell short of their bids in the LPGA elims.

Del Rosario is now waging her campaign on the Epson Tour, formerly the Symetra Tour, after winning a leg in the East Coast Women’s Pro Tour, the other highly competitive pro women’s circuit for players aspiring to make it the LPGA Tour.

Arevalo, the 2020 Philippine Ladies Open champion, hopes to start strong in an 11:50 a.m. tee-time with Jennifer Ayala and Caroline Hwang on No. 10 of the long 7,101-yard, par-72 layout with the longest par-5 on No. 7 measured at 580 yards. The par-3 No. 13 will be played over a 214-yard distance.

Others tipped to contend for top honors this week are Amber Bosworth, Paige Crawford, Ginger Howard and Caroline Hwang of the US, Japanese Yuna Arakawa, Mexico’s Nicole Autrique, French Elodie Chapelet, Colombia’s Maria Donado, and Canadians Josee Doyon and Kate Johnston and Chinese Simin Feng.

Next up for Arevalo is the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana Open at the National Golf Club in Westlake on March 15-18 before WAPT action shifts to Texas for the Mackie Construction Pro Golf Classic on April 5-8 at the Abilene Country Club in Abilene and the Wichita Falls Championship on April 12-15 in Wichita Falls.

Abby Arevalo stumbled in a frontside finish to turn in a one-under 71 as she fell behind by five strokes to a solid Kaitlin Milligan at the start of the Houma Golf Classic at the Ellendale Country Club in Houma, Louisiana Tuesday.

Unable to cash in on Ellendale’s long holes at the back, Arevalo dominated the last two par-5s, birdying Nos. 3 and 7, only to stumble with a miscue on the ninth to finish with a 35-36 for joint 17th in the 72-hole championship marking the start of the Women’s All Pro Tour, one of the qualifying tournaments for the LPGA Tour.

The Top 5 after the 13-stage circuit will advance outright to Stage II of the LPGA Qualifying later this year.

Coming off a long break, Arevalo, the 2020 Philippine Ladies Open champion who marked her pro debut with a victory on the Cactus Tour last year, snapped a run of pars with a birdie on the par-3 No. 13 but missed a couple of birdie chances before yielding a stroke on the 18th, staying in joint 30th in the 85-player starting field.

But the ICTSI-backed shotmaker hit two superb shots on the par-3 No. 5 and netted a birdie then repeated the feat on No. 7 to make up for some flubbed opportunities on the layout’s par-4s, the last of which she bogeyed as she slipped from joint 11th to a share of 17th.

Milligan, meanwhile, sizzled early, shooting three birdies in the first seven holes then fired another three-birdie binge in a four-hole stretch from No. 13 to string a pair of 33s-66 for a one-stroke lead over Olivia Benzin, who bounced back from a two-bogey, one-birdie round after three holes at the back with a stirring five-birdie splurge from No. 14.

She gunned down two more birdies on Nos. 3 and 5 but missed gaining a share of the lead with a bogey on the sixth for a 67.

Three others stood another stroke back at 68, including Yue Ren, Mariel Galdiano and Micheala Williams, while turned in identical 69s, including Simin Feng and Kenzie Wright, in what promises to a tight, fierce chase for top honors in the $55,000 tournament of the circuit dubbed the PXT Race to Stage II.
