UNFINDABLE RING is found! It is out, go listen wherever you listen, and ideally Front->Back. U.R. is an ā€œadventureā€, carefully threaded together to taste.
I play software synths and sound design (a lot of the grating, dissonant, field-recorded stuff) and a little cello and piano. Lane also played synth and piano, so anything played more tastefully and beautifully is likely her. My cleanest contribution is probably the piano on Queens.
I am so proud of this band. Heaven, Diego, Ellie, Austin, Lane. Everyone’s voices are clear on this thing, and it wouldn’t be half the record without any one member.
Front cover breakdown soon, but today I’m getting into the back cover. This was my original idea for the front, and I talked Heaven into keeping it in the packaging as the back of the LP. Since the art direction for this series was a kind of junkyard iSpy kid’s magazine world, we needed a treasure map somewhere. Heaven is a cool tattoo guy so I thought… ā€œWhat if the Grumpy character had a big swaggy treasure map hand tat so they never lost the map on their grueling journey?ā€
The design is credited to ā€œGood&Dunnā€ because my partner Aminta drew the treasure map in pencil and I converted it into a hand tat. They also kept me going with feedback, encouragement and shoulder rubs through every piece of art.
The hand-triumphantly-emerging-with-found-ring was originally going to rise out of water, but there were already too many maritime images & a desert-y landscape rounded out Grumpy’s travels. The sand is from a pic I took of Diego at some dunes on tour out west.
Another big inspiration this cycle was the lighting and perspective of the museum of natural history dioramas.
The ring is all the shiny jewelry I had lying around, collaged and swirled to show its unfindable-ness folding the universe in on itself. Each track title got its own little stretchy treatment. I’ve attached a pic of my desk on the final day all art was due. Note how it looks similar to the pile of junk in the art.
I wanna thank our amazing label @bayonetrecords . Katie, Sam, Evan, you guys are the wind in our sails. Hope all youse enjoy these songs half as much as we enjoyed making em.

next up in my series of BEHIND THE RING .. a behind the scenes look at how the sausage is made so to speak. this week is ā€œThe Whaleā€ ft D.A. Crimson. the track is doing great, and even was written out in the guardian ( pic by @michaeltyronedelaney ) ! I even made a time lapse of the rough drafts and edits this time (slide 9). Early sketches for this one were inspired by concept art for walt disney’s pinocchio, where we’d put heaven and diego in a boat inside of a whale amongst piles of junk. When the cover art concept for OBL started to solidify as the image of the band in an intertube on the sea we decided it would be too much boat stuff to have both those two designs, so we pivoted to what I think was one of my first concepts for the record cover, a sky full of flying keys and Heaven with some binoculars by a seaside lighthouse. we tried a few different shots of diego, but the best one was a pic of them smoking from the BTS of our video for ā€œbird partsā€ (also worth checking out). inspirations for the work (as well as the creative direction of the overall single and vinyl art) include the flying monkeys from MGM’s Wizard of Oz, Frank L. Baum’s original Oz illustrator W.W. Denslow, Terry Gilliam’s cutout art (also see the glutton in the video played by Austin our drummer) as well as his excessive use of fish-eye lens & absurdism & high saturation, the artist behind goosebumps Tim Jacobus, and iSpy Treasure Hunt, both the book and the 2001 computer game. and because i have been getting this question here and there, NO I do not use generative AI to make these! im an old school digital collage artist and i have been practicing that since i was like 8 years old. Everything you see in the cover is built from pictures i took or hand drew. thanks for all the love on these BTS posts, it’s been really fun to talk about this stuff with everyone and there’s clearly a hunger for this kind of large scope integrative creativity. make your dreams come true, fools!!!! > : )
