While hosting my setup for some local photographers during @abi_glz3 meetup the challenge of the day was could I create something compelling with two small lights in harsh sunlight and of course I had to take the challenge!!!! I decided what better than the @westcottlighting FJ200 paired with the FJ80ii paired with a Rapid Box Switch Octa-S and a 7 inch reflector!!!!!
I know, I know crazy, especially since the sun was off to the right of frame. But I was 1000% confident in my knowledge and what Westcott is capable!!! To break it down I exposed for the ambient - about 2 stops under exposure. With the fj200 paired with the rapidbox octa-S, I had in either a loop or butterfly position (varies image to image) feathered to the right or sometimes the left to create that contrast on the body! The softbox was relatively close to have that rapid falloff to create mood!! For the fj80ii I used a 7 inch reflector as active fill and did a 8 to 1 ratio (3 stops) from key just to lift the shadows on the right side of her body. I wanted some dimension and still retain detail. Lastly using a small 41 inch reflector I used to block a stop of light from the sun that was hitting the face, by doing so I was able to have a nice diffused even transition of light with minimal specularity or harsh lines. When an idea strikes you, it is completely untested, but you have a vision. Denae was immediately onboard and down to give it a go.

The concept was an extended exposure of 2-4 seconds with a rear sync flash consisting of: letting her hair down or a hair flip, giving it a good shake, and the final frozen pose being a stoic look into the camera. The building blocks are there however we did get some very cool ethereal shots that really took on a vibe of their own, almost like a fleeting memory.

Extended exposure has that melding of creative and technical challenge. It's fickle and unforgiving but even when the stars aren't perfectly aligned there's still magic in the imperfections. I am still confident with more fine tuning the original concept is achievable in a single exposure.

Thank you Denae for being a great sport and a pleasure to work with.

Thank you Abisai for putting together a great meetup and great location, everyone was super nice and welcoming.

Thank you EJ for letting me hijack the lights for a bit.
