Lima, Peru: The one with tattooed meat, no water, no Starlink, GI bugs everywhere, and a visit from the US Embassy.

To the @uniusateam staff—especially Anne and Dr. Ron Olson—thank you for helping me keep these incredible world class swimmers healthy and race ready. It truly took an [athletes] village, and despite every challenge that came our way, @fisuamericagames_teamusa kept finding its way onto the podium.

To the coaches, thank you for making me feel like part of the team from day one. You handled every obstacle with professionalism, kept the athletes focused, and somehow still found time to teach, laugh, and make the week memorable. It was a privilege working and exploring with every one of you, I had so much fun!

To the athletes, thank you for trusting me with your health and welcoming me as one of your own. This week presented numerous challenges for me and for you. You overcame more than most people will ever know and STILL brought home 97 medals, 42 golds, and numerous podium sweeps. You were professional, so easy to work with, and represented Team USA with pride, resilience, and class. Being your team physician was an honor, and I miss working with you all every day. I can’t wait to see where swimming—and life—takes each of you next.

From daily “Insights with Dave,” crammed Uber rides, bus karaoke, and the never-ending quest to get Johno his margarita, to making the best of every unexpected challenge, this is a trip none of us will ever forget.
